'It's always for the safety of the victim' WPS respond to no-contact order breaches

Two people in Weyburn breached a no contact order last week, however Deputy Chief Shane St. John with the Weyburn Police Service says they are two different circumstances. 

Last Monday, the WPS received a report of a man contacting a woman in violation of a no contact condition. This is considered a breach of recognizance, and he was charged accordingly and released with a future court date. 

WTAP and WYC combining to light up the summer with Glow Dance fundraiser

The Weyburn Therapeutic Animal Park (WTAP) has been busy since their opening day on June 7th. Hosting a flock of new and interesting animals, including ducks, alpacas, bunnies, ponies, and more; the fun never stops at the park.  

That fun is going to continue into July as they’re partnering with the Weyburn Youth Centre for a Glow Dance Fundraiser on July 19th. Janay Kistanov, president and communications manager at WTAP, talks about the intriguing new fundraiser. 

Same party, but with a roof: WCU Community Barbecue to be held indoors Thursday

Due to a good chance of rain on Thursday evening, the Weyburn Credit Union's annual Community Barbecue this Thursday, June 26th, from 5:00 to 9:30 p.m., will now be held in the Weyburn Agricultural Society's Exhibition Hall.  

Marketing Coordinator Jasmine Kravanya said it's a free event, with live music from Switch and $76,000 being presented to 11 local not-for-profit organizations.

A full day of fun in the works on Canada Day at Nickle Lake Regional Park

Nickle Lake Regional Park will bring the fun once again this year for anyone to celebrate Canada Day in style, with a full day of fun things planned for this Tuesday, July 1st, including some staples and some new features.

It all kicks off with a fun annual tradition for the kids at the park - the bike parade.

"Anybody who wants to get on the bike line up at 9:45 a.m., down at the Beaver Den, we'll go through the entire park," invited Park Manager Darren Wheeler.

Once the parade is concluded, the bikes will line up near the Beaver Den for judging and prizes.

Full 2025-26 Red Wings schedule released

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings will open the 2025-26 season on September 19th, when they host the Yorkton Terriers at Crescent Point Place.  

The SJHL released the full schedule for the upcoming season Wednesday afternoon, with each team playing a balanced 56-game schedule. For the Red Wings, their defense of the Viterra Division pennant will start with a home-and-home against the Terriers, with the second half being played September 20th in Yorkton.  

A night behind bars: WPS respond to four calls for public intoxication

Four people spent the night behind bars in the last week, after being taken into custody by the Weyburn Police Service for public intoxication. Deputy Police Chief Shane St. John says they have seen an uptick in these incidents.  

“We get a lot of those calls for intoxicated people. Sometimes they have sober friends or family that can take them. Sometimes they're not around or not willing to take them and they just can't be in public. So there is definitely an uptick and the warmer weather has something to do with that for sure.” 

More severe weather possible for Weyburn, southeast Saskatchewan

Less than a week after thunderstorms brought upwards of eight tornadoes to the southeast part of the province, Weyburn and the surrounding area could see more storm activity throughout the day today.  

Environment Canada meteorologist Crawford Luke said while some storms could form locally, it’s more likely that any severe weather in the southeast will arrive from the west later in the day. 

Invasive plant species making its presence known in southeast

An invasive, noxious plant is making its presence known in southeast Saskatchewan, and experts are urging residents to take precautions and act quickly if they spot it on their property. 

Wild parsnip is an aggressive weed known for both its rapid spread and hazardous effects on human skin. It has been spreading rapidly throughout the region, especially along highways and ditches.
