Pope leads traditional mass, uses Indigenous languages during Alberta stops

Pope Francis spoke in three First Nations languages at a sacred pilgrimage site hours after his public mass in Edmonton was called a missed opportunity for not including Indigenous culture or traditions. 

On Tuesday, Francis joined hundreds of people at Lac Ste. Anne, northwest of Edmonton, and during a church service, wearing a red Metis sash around his neck, said hello in Nakota, Cree and Blackfoot.

"Aba-wash-did! Tansi! Oki!"

Many cheered.

Fort Saskatchewan resident finds RCMP note in unlocked vehicle

Fort Saskatchewan resident Colton Aucoin woke up to find a note from police left inside his vehicle.

He told MIX 107 it happened last Tuesday (July 19).

"I noticed it because I didn’t leave anything on my dash, there was a note face up. It was a note from the RCMP,” said Aucoin.

According to Aucoin, the note detailed what could have been stolen from his unlocked car -- his bag or the car -- while he was parked on a residential road. 

“I talked to my neighbours and they saw [the officer] too.”

Edmonton: 

Big things in store this season for Fort Falcons Football

The minor football season in Fort Saskatchewan is just about ready for kickoff. 

According to Chris Malo, coaching director for Fort Saskatchewan Football, the Fort Falcons have seen record registration ahead of the start of the season next week. Practice begins on Aug. 2, followed by a fundraising event on Aug. 6 in partnership with the Edmonton Huskies.

The bantam team, which typically sees close to 30 registrations, is nearing 40 signups this season.

Mabel Hamilton, an ag education champion and respected beef industry leader is being inducted into the Canadian Agricultural Hall of Fame. 

Hamilton was nominated by the Canadian Angus Association.

Hall of Fame President Ted Menzies says Mabel Hamilton was raised on a ranch just outside of Calgary, and for more than 40 years has been involved in promoting the beef industry.

It's no secret that Costco's gas prices are significantly cheaper than most fuel stations.

Fort Saskatchewan's gas is currently sitting at $1.679 to $1.729 cents per litre, while some Costcos are at an incredible $1.449 cents per litre — a 20-plus cent discount. But how is Costco able to offer such low prices?

Gas Buddy's Head of Petroleum Analysis Patrick De Haan explains that it's part of Costco's strategy to get more customers not only for their gas but for their other goods as well.

City introduces three new grassland areas that will no longer be mowed

The City of Fort Saskatchewan is working to naturalize some green spaces in the area.

As part of their naturalization program, there are three areas that will no longer be mowed and turn into grassland.

Grassland is a large, innate, open area covered in grass -- these areas thrive best in prairie conditions that present mix of hot, dry and humid weather. 

RCMP still searching for the vehicle that struck pedestrian bridge

On Thursday (July 21) morning, a vehicle struck the pedestrian bridge on Highway 15 just before the turnoff to 95 Street. 

Blocks of concrete fell onto the road below, which forced RCMP to reduce the road to one lane. 

Police say there is still are no solid leads as to who is responsible for the damage. 

“We did have some witnesses come forward with limited details on a vehicle description,” said Constable Lauren Mowbray with RCMP.

Fort Saskatchewan RCMP issue update on missing paddleboarder

The Fort Saskatchewan RCMP say a missing paddleboarder's body has been recovered. 

According to a release, Parks Canada, along with their cadaver dog and a provincial dive team, recovered the body of a missing man from Astotin Lake in Elk Island National Park.

The 42-year-old went missing on Saturday (July 23), when he was paddleboarding with another person and they lost sight of each other. 

"Parks Canada is deeply saddened by this tragedy. Our hearts are with the family and friends of the individual," added Parks Canada in a statement about the situation.
