Kenney to learn fate as party announces results of leadership review vote

Alberta Premier Jason Kenney is to learn today if he still has enough support from his party to stay on as leader.

The United Conservative Party plans to release the results of the mail-in balloting on Kenney’s leadership review.

It’s been a contentious process, with Kenney facing open criticism from a number of caucus members.

If he gets majority support — even a slim majority — he says he will stay on as leader.

He says if that happens, he expects opponents will get behind him or face yet-to-be-named consequences.

Prince Charles nods to 'darker' past, need for reconciliation as Canadian tour begins

Prince Charles and Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall, began a three-day Canadian tour Tuesday in St. John’s, N.L., where the prince shared his views on reconciliation with Indigenous people before the couple took part in an emotional healing ceremony.

In a speech delivered in the foyer of the provincial legislature, the prince said the land that became Canada has been cared for by Indigenous people — First Nations, Métis and Inuit — for thousands of years.

Airdrie welcomes newest $50 million snack facility

Super-Pufft, one of North America’s largest manufacturers and co-packers of salty snacks for retailers and national brands, has established a new state-of-the-art potato chip processing facility in Airdrie at 705 East Lake Road NE. 

Nate Horner, Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Rural Economic Development, spoke to DiscoverAirdrie about the new facility coming to the city. 

Strathcona County Awards of Excellence recipients have been announced

Recipients for this years Strathcona County Awards of Excellence have been revealed. 

The awards ceremony will be held on June 13 at Festival Place starting at 7:00 p.m. with doors opening at 6:30 p.m.

“The Strathcona County Awards of Excellence is our County’s opportunity to recognize extraordinary citizens, businesses and organizations for their contributions and positive impact on our community,” said Mayor Rod Frank.

Walmart loses the plastic, moves to reusable bags

The Fort Saskatchewan Walmart has completely removed plastic bags from its checkout counters.

The decision to remove the bags is a part of Walmart's sustainability plan. The plan includes goals such as harvesting wind and solar energy to power their stores, hoping for 100 per cent renewable energy by 2035. Additionally, they wish to drop their global emissions to zero by 2040. 

Walmart also pledges to restore at least fifty million acres of land and one million square miles of ocean by 2030.

Council approves $417,600 hybrid-model study into Fort Sask pools

Fort Saskatchewan city council recently approved a study looking into the future of the city’s aquatic infrastructure.  

The discussion around the state of Fort Saskatchewan's aquatic infrastructure has been happening for many years. In 2008, the city added a pool to its Recreation and Culture master plan, and several studies have since been conducted. 

Artists chosen for Fort Saskatchewan's Art in Public Places Program

Two residents from Fort Saskatchewan will soon have their artwork displayed for the public's enjoyment.

The city recently selected two artists as part of the 2022 Art in Public Places Program. Each year, the city allocates funds to purchase up to two pieces of art to put on public display—one from an adult visual artist and another from a student artist.
