Fort Saskatchewan residents are reacting to the upcoming speed limit changes. 

Changes to speed limits in the city are taking effect on May 16. These updates aim to align with the traffic safety project, Vision Zero.

Some of the affected areas are school zones, unmarked residential roads and the downtown core. 

Average gas prices jumped eight cents over last week in Alberta

Despite rising gas prices across Canada, Albertans can rejoice in having the lowest gas prices in the country.

In Fort Saskatchewan and Sherwood Park, regular gas prices are currently $1.59/litre, while in nearby Edmonton, prices hover around $1.55/litre.

Alberta's average price of $1.52/litre was up eight cents from last week.

Canada's Got Talent journey ends for Fort Saskatchewan dancer

St. André Bessette's Dayton Paradis will not be moving on in Canada's Got Talent.

The 16-year-old is part of a dance group called the Itty Bitty Crew, along with dancers Ethan and Ayden Valdriz. Earlier this year, the trio auditioned for Canada's Got Talent and wowed the judges with their dance about anxiety.

They got a standing ovation from the audience and a yes from all four judges, allowing them to move on to the next stage of the competition.

Free shredding event to protect against identity theft coming to Fort Saskatchewan

A free community shredding event is taking place on Saturday (May 7) at the First Memorial Funeral Services Riverview Chapel.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., a secure shredding truck will be on-site to help people get rid of boxes stacked with paper 30 lbs. or less. 

Shredding documents that contain sensitive personal information is a great way to protect against identity theft. 

"Last year, we had a flatbed truck that showed up where we had over 200 boxes," Neil Campbell-Wallwork, the location manager at First Memorial, said.

There continues to be an increase in the number of cases of avian influenza in Western Canada 

The latest case of the highly pathonegenic avian influenza in Saskatchewan was found just south of Moose Jaw in the RM of Baildon.

On the CFIA website it states it was found on a commercial poultry operation.

The Manager at the colony Peter Hofer says he wants to clarify the situation. 

"We have a duck operation where we raise ducks for our own personal consumption. The ducks did get infected with this bird flu, but with the protocal that we use in our commercial flock of layering hens there is no sign of the disease there."

Drivers warned of province-wide highway cleanup this weekend

Thousands of people are going to be doing work along the Alberta highways.

On Saturday (May 7), volunteers will participate in Alberta Transportation's 46th Annual Highway Cleanup Campaign from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

The volunteers from different youth groups and clubs will spend the day walking along roadways, picking up trash and litter to raise funds for their organisation or a chosen charity.

One man performs the entire Star Wars trilogy

The off-broadway play based on the original Star Wars trilogy is coming to the Shell Theatre on Saturday (May 14).

Growing up on a farm, Charles Ross had no television stations; but he did have a copy of Star Wars on videocassette. As his go-to childhood film, Ross sympathised with the journey of Luke Skywalker, going from farm boy to jedi knight.

April jobless rate drops to another new low as economy adds 1K jobs in April: StatCan

Statistics Canada says the jobless rate fell in April to another record low as employment was little changed for the month with a gain of 1,000 jobs.

The unemployment rate came in at 5.2 per cent for April compared with the previous record low of 5.3 per cent set in March.

The drop in the rate came as the number of jobs in professional, scientific and technical services rose by 15,000 in April and the public administration category gained 17,000.

Survey says Strathcona County is a great place to live

Results are in for the 2021 Strathcona County public satisfaction survey. 

According to the survey, residents overwhelmingly feel positive about the safety of the area and the environment to raise children. 88 per cent of all survey respondents rated Strathcona County as a good or very good place to live. 

“I think we have been able to deliver quality municipal services over a number of years, and that’s what the results speak to,” said Rod Frank, mayor of Strathcona County.
