UCP wins majority government; Danielle Smith back as premier

Danielle Smith and the United Conservative Party (UCP) will form the next provincial government. 

At the time of publishing, the UCP hold 49 of the 87 seats in the legislature. 

"My oath is to serve all Albertans, no matter how you voted," said Smith. "I will work every day to listen, improve, and demonstrate to you that I can be trusted to improve on the issues you care so deeply about." 

This was the first general election win for Smith. She took over as leader of the UCP following the resignation of Jason Kenney in May of last year. 

Nate Glubish re-elected as MLA for Strathcona-Sherwood Park

Nate Glubish will return as the MLA for Strathcona-Sherwood Park.

Glubish will be in the position for the next four years after defeating NDP candidate Bill Tonita with 53 per cent of the popular vote.

"Elections are always a lot of hard work. They involve door knocking, a lot of phone calls, town halls, and forums," said Glubish on his campaign. "This election was no different."

He told FortSaskOnline.com he was happy with the result.

Dale Nally wins re-election

Dale Nally has been re-elected as the MLA for Morinville-St. Albert. 

Nally gathered 51 per cent of the popular vote, defeating NDP candidate Karen Shaw, who finished with about 45 per cent. 

Nally began his term in 2019 where he served as the Associate Minister of Natural Gas and Electricity. 

In October of 2022, Nally was appointed as the Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction. 

Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk re-elected

UCP candidate Jackie Armstrong-Homeniuk has been re-elected as the MLA for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville. 

Armstrong-Homeniuk will enter her second term after defeating Taneen Rudyk of the NDP and three other candidates.

"I can't say enough about the great team I have around me," said Armstrong-Homeniuk. "This is a win for Alberta. This is a win for Fort Saskatchewan-Vegreville."

Armstrong-Homeniuk held about 58 per cent of the popular vote -- Rudyk was second with just over 37 per cent.

FCC's chief economist JP Gervais says it's an interesting time in the ag markets right now.

He points out that a key factor overall right now is the high-interest rates, something he doesn't expect to see change anytime soon. 

Gervais says commodity prices have come down lately and there's a lot of uncertainty going forward as to what the crops are going to look like in the prairies and around the world.
