Arsenal have strong showing at City Finals
It was a big weekend for Fort Saskatchewan soccer.
Six teams competed in the City Finals, as they were in the top four teams in their tier. All but two then walked away with medals.
The U11 Boys (Bassett) won all three of their games in the tournament and took home gold. The U13 Girls (Thompson) also managed to go undefeated and take home first place.
The U11 Girls (Homeniuk) and U11 Girls (Oshust) both faced tough competition. With each team getting one win over the weekend, they both walked away with bronze medals.
New rink coming to Southfort Meadows
Some new amenities are coming to a Fort Saskatchewan neighbourhood.
In 2014, the city began looking into adding an outdoor rink to the park in Southfort Meadows. The intent was for the rink to be built in 2015, but due to a slow-down of development at that time, the project was delayed and the park itself wasn't finished until 2021.
Work to design the new outdoor facility is now underway. The plan is to have a full-sized outdoor rink with lights and a concrete surface so that it can be used year-round.
'It's genocide' former premier condemns attacks against Ukraine, says Canada must prepare
Former premier Ed Stelmach is appalled by the situation in Ukraine.
As a resident of rural Lamont County, Stelmach is a Ukrainian descendent. His grandparents immigrated from a small Ukrainian village and settled in the area in 1898.
He has many Ukrainian friends from the area and during his time as premier, met up with and signed many agreements with communities in Ukraine to create more trade opportunities. Given their connection, it has been quite difficult for many, including Stelmach, to see the attacks from Russia.
AGT Foods is expanding into the oat market
AGT Foods has announced plans to build a value-added oat milling facility in Saskatchewan.
Construction on the expansion of their Aberdeen facility will begin right away, with the oat milling operation expected to be up and running by the end of 2022.
The area is known to supply about 30 per cent of Canada's oat production.
The facility will feature state-of-the-art food technologies.
President and CEO of AGT Murad Al-Katib says they are excited about the new venture.
It's the best of the worst of COVID T.V.
To be totally truthful, my COVID-19 downtime included a lot of screen time.
Too tired to really focus on anything worth watching, I found myself watching what I would call "guilty pleasure TV", or mindless drivel — bad television at its finest.
It's not like there isn't enough of it, from Love is Blind, 90-day Fiancé to the hit series Too hot to Handle, there was more than enough to fill my two weeks on the couch.
Here are my 3 "best of the worst" when it comes to bad shows.
1) Season 2 of Tiger King
The federal Conservative party will have a new leader by Sept. 10
The Conservative Party of Canada will wait until Sept. 10 to pick a new leader, providing more time for prospective candidates to mount their campaigns, including former Quebec premier Jean Charest.
Charest met with about 40 MPs and senators Wednesday evening before the rules of the contest were announced several hours later. He said he was waiting to see the rules before making a decision.
City awards thousands in grant money to three local events
The City of Fort Saskatchewan is giving funding to some local groups.
Their Tourism Hosting Grant program looks for local non-profits that are planning to host a big event. The event must be at the provincial level or higher and be beneficial to the community.
"What's exciting about this year is that we're finally able to award our grants because we haven't been able to do that as a result of the pandemic," said Heather Cowie, manager of community and protective services.
AHS temporarily allowing walk-in vaccine appointments for young children
More vaccination opportunities are being given to young Albertans.
Alberta Health Services (AHS) will temporarily open walk-in appointment times for the COVID-19 vaccine in the Edmonton Zone, for children aged five to 11.
The goal is to provide additional opportunities for families who wish to vaccinate their children.
Starting Wednesday (Mar.2) until Mar.16, several local AHS vaccination clinics will stay open weekday evenings until 8 p.m., on Saturdays until 6 p.m. and until 4:30 p.m. on Sundays.
