La Broquerie slowpitch star Carriere off to Nationals

Slo-pitch super star Andre Carriere is heading off to Leduc, Alberta, as part of Team Manitoba, and the veteran ball player is thrilled to represent the south east on the big stage, once again.

"I'm joining a men's slo-pitch team, out of Winnipeg," explains Carriere. "I'm joining them for the national championship in Leduc, Alberta. We're leaving tonight, we're flying out. The tournament is Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday. We're back home on Tuesday."

Connections coming in handy

Strathmore swimmer takes home gold from Canada Summer Games

Casey Kruse, a Strathmore swimmer and Special Olympics athlete, took home some heavy metal from the Canada Summer Games in St. John's, Newfoundland.

By the end of her time at the event, Kruse took home two gold medals - one in the 100 metre freestyle and another in the 50 metre breaststroke.

"It was one of the best meets I have ever done in my lifetime," said Kruse. "There was so much competition and so many people I had never met before. It was so much fun."

Cobras kick off RVS football season in Chestermere tonight

Two weeks of camp—and for some players, summer training—have led to tonight’s season opener for the Cochrane High Cobras.

The Cobras are in Chestermere to face the Lakers in the lone game of the night.

This season, the team moves up to 4A football, stepping into stiffer competition, though they’ve faced 4A schools before in Rocky View divisional play.

Sports Round-Up: Thursday, Aug 28

The Moose Jaw Warriors 2025 training camp on-ice sessions begin today. All ice times – including the scrimmages that kick off at noon – are being held at the Temple Gardens Centre and are open to the public.

The 2025 training camp will wrap up on Sunday with the team’s annual Grey and Red intrasquad game. Entry to the game will be by donation to CMHA Moose Jaw.

Western Prairie Klippers name new head coach

The Western Prairie Junior Klippers made an announcement on Wednesday night with the upcoming Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League season coming up soon.

"We’re proud to announce Mike Clayton as the new Head Coach of the Western Prairie Jr. Klippers," posted the team to social media. 

"Originally from Rosetown, Mike began his journey in minor hockey before competing at the Senior level for three seasons. He then transitioned into officiating, dedicating 25 years to the role with professionalism and integrity."

Estevan umpire Braden Lonsbury represents Saskatchewan at National Baseball Championship

After 35 years behind the plate, Estevan’s Braden Lonsberry continues to prove why he’s one of Saskatchewan’s most respected baseball officials. This summer, he was selected to umpire at the Canadian Senior Men’s National Baseball Championship in Regina, his eighth national appearance and second time officiating at the senior level.

“I was one of 12 umpires and three supervisors,” Lonsberry said. “There were people from all over Canada, my roommate was from Quebec, and the other person on my crew was from Ontario.”

Growing up in Souris, Emily Tuttosi loved rugby, and the star has taken that love of the game around the world, and is representing Canada at the 2025 Women's Rugby World Cup.

Going back to the beginning of her journey, Tuttosi can't remember a time where she didn't love the game of rugby. "Thankfully, Souris school had a youth rugby program," she says with a smile. "My older brother played, and I have a twin sister, and we both were pretty aggressive, so it seemed like a good sport to try. 20-some years later, here I am."

Volleyball star Paiton Stoesz thrilled to be with Taika, part of big fundraiser today

From the start of her volleyball career to now, 15-year-old Paiton Stoesz may have come to the sport a little later, but with her talent, competitiveness and love of the game, she continues to be a star.

From the ice to the court

Starting in sports, Stoesz says she actually started in a very different sport from the one she plays now. "I started off by playing hockey," the La Broquerie product says with her trademark smile. "In the winter of 2022/23, I decided to quit hockey and really focus on volleyball."
