Sports Update - Tuesday, November 5th
Team MJHL will face Team SJHL tonight (7:30 p.m.) in Warman, Saskatchewan in the first of two games at the Western All-Star Showcase. Serving as a pre-selection camp for Team Canada West, forty of the top 19U prospects from the Manitoba Junior Hockey League and Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League started on-ice sessions Monday and will play two games during the Showcase in front of Team Canada West staff and scouts from all higher levels of hockey (NCAA/WHL/U Sports/NHL, etc.). A total of 30 players will be invited from the western CJHL leagues (AJHL, SJHL, MJHL, SIJHL).
Sports Update - Tuesday, November 5th
Dwight Sawatzky and Easton Lounsbury each had a goal and an assist in the Pembina Tigers 4-2 victory over the Mountain Mustangs in the lone Zone 4 High School Hockey League game Monday night in Swan Lake. Brad Sloane and Russell Wall also scored for the Tigers. Reid Budd and Miguel Collet replied for the Mustangs. Pembina goaltender Jamie Park made 14 saves while Nolan Grenier faced 56 shots in net for Mountain.
HTA Knights plow through Croxford
The HTA Knights plowed through the W.H. Croxford High Cavaliers with a 47-0 shutout victory during their zone 2 finals on Friday night (Nov. 1).
Like all season long, the Knights piled on the yards, with 233 rushing and 174 in the air for 407 yards. HTA held Croxford to just double digits in yardage, with 51 coming in the air and 19 from the rush for 70 yards. The Knights also held Croxford to just two completions out of six on third down.
Cavalry FC has two more finalist for CPL awards
The Canadian Premier League named two more finalists for their year-end awards.
Cavalry FC Head Coach and GM Tommy Wheeldon Jr. have been nominated for Coach of the Year and Tobias Warschewski has been named as a finalist for the CPL Player of the Year honours.
Wheeldon Jr. won the Coach of the Year last season and has been nominated for the award four times for his effective coaching style. Cavalry had the best road record with 25 points acquired while posting a 7-4-3 record.
Sports Round-Up: Tuesday, November 5
The Moose Jaw Warriors are preparing for Friday night’s game at the Hangar against the Lethbridge Hurricanes. The team then travels to Medicine Hat Saturday to take on the Tigers.
Senior Boys volleyball quarterfinal tonight, it’s a matchup between Cornerstone and Briercrest - Central, Peacock, and Vanier all have a bye to the semi-finals.
Senior Girls volleyball quarterfinals tonight, Notre Dame plays Cornerstone, Central faces Peacock, and its Rouleau against Briercrest. Vanier has a bye.
NHL last night, the Oilers were shutout by the New Jersey Devils, 3-0.
Terrier goalies enjoying the ride to start the year
You may have to be a little off to throw yourself intentionally into the path of five-and-a-half-ounce block of vulcanized rubber. But Mitchell Kathler and Ryan Velan have somehow found a love for it, playing one of the toughest positions in all of sports.
The goalie duo for the Portage Terriers have been key parts of the eight-game win streak the Dogs find themselves on, with great performances each game. Velan came to the team after an injury in training camp, and says he feels good about getting his team in a position to win each game.
Saskatchewan falls to defending champions at U18s
The defending gold medalists from Ontario Red got the better of Saskatchewan 5-2 today at the Hockey Canada U18 Women's National Championship in New Brunswick.
Defenceman Rayna Hennie and right winger Raela Packet of the Swift Current Innovation Federal Credit Union are suiting up for Saskatchewan.
Ontario built leads of 3-0 and 4-1. Saskatchewan was twice able to cut those leads to two goals but couldn't catch up to the Ontario squad that has won the event thirteen out of fourteen times.
Highwood SV Girls Volleyball win nail-biter in best-of-five against HCC
The Highwood Mustangs Senior Girls Volleyball team came out on top of their first playoff game against Holy Cross Collegiate Hawks (HCC) on Wednesday (Oct. 30) with a 3-2 set win in their best-of-five set series.
The Mustangs and Hawks were evenly matched as Highwood finished fourth in the season and Holy Cross finished fifth. With the win, the Mustangs will advance to the next round.
Goldeyes re-sign star pitcher Bourassa ahead of 2025 season
The Winnipeg Goldeyes announced Monday that right-handed starting pitcher Landen Bourassa has signed with the club for the 2025 American Association season. It will be the Lethbridge, Alberta native’s fifth season with the Goldeyes.
Bourassa made 20 starts in 2024, going 8-7 with a pair of complete games. He recorded a 4.01 earned run average in 119 innings.
Memorable weekend for Ponoka Broncs football
It was a historic weekend for Ponoka Broncs football.
Since football’s return to Ponoka in 2007, the Broncs hadn't won a league championship until this past weekend.
The Bantam Broncs earned the Pool A CAFL title, while the Peewee Broncs earned the Pool C CPWFL title. The Senior Broncs won their last game, earning third spot.
The bantams and seniors have advanced to provincials, another first for Ponoka football.
The Bantam Broncs will be hosting provincials against the Taber Rebels on Saturday, November 9 at 2 p.m.
