Landmark Blues head into the season with a special team

Landmark Blues have a strong program in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League this year. 

Jackson Reimer, forward for the Blues, is going into his third year with the team and says it has been the best place he’s ever played. 

“I wouldn't want to play anywhere else. I've had opportunities to play elsewhere but stay loyal to Landmark because it’s a special team, special group, and I think we can do something very special this season.” 

Legionnaires featured tonight on Local Sports Live

Local Sports Live will make the leap to Magic 97 tonight to broadcast the Swift Current Home Hardware U18 AAA Legionnaires as they "Pack the 'Plex".

Swift Current is looking to extend its winning streak to seven games after losing its season opener and will clash with the 6-1 Saskatoon Blazers.

"Obviously a great start (for us)," Legionnaires forward Connor Rieger told Magic 97's Colin Powers this morning. "This weekend is a really good test for us. Four points on the table, so it would be nice to come out of it with all four points against a good team."

Time running out to register for hugely popular Cochrane spiel

The countdown has begun for one of Cochrane's most popular bonspiels that attracts teams from across the province.

The 14th annual Super Seniors Squares is being held from Nov. 20 to 24 at the Cochrane Curling Centre. They can accommodate up to 45 teams, and it's not uncommon to sell out.

It's no problem if you want to curl but don't have a team. Coordinator Doug Campbell says they'll find just the right team for you.

Campbell says there's several reasons why it's become the most popular seniors bonspiel in southern Alberta.

Terriers' six-game win streak on the line against Oil Capitals

The Portage Terriers have won six consecutive games for the first time this year, with wins over the Steinbach Pistons, Niverville Nighthawks, the Winnipeg Blues, Freeze, and a pair of wins over the Virden Oil Capitals.

Portage has gotten tremendous offensive efforts from Cam Bullinger to start the year, as he leads the league in points, and the Terriers in goals.

The Dogs have also gotten solid efforts out of their netminder duo, Mitchell Kathler and Ryan Velan, who have each played three games in the win streak.

Curling community grows: Estevan Curling Club welcomes new faces this season

The Estevan Curling Club is gearing up for an exciting new season, thanks to the hard work of its dedicated volunteers and enthusiastic curlers. Club president Tyler McMillen shared that preparations have gone smoothly, with ice installation completed without any issues.

"This fall has been exciting, and Lawrence Hanson, our ice maker, and his crew of volunteers did a fantastic job getting the ice ready," he said.

Gushue to play for bronze after loss to Japan

Brad Gushue will play for bronze this afternoon at the Pan Continental Curling Championships in Lacombe after falling to Japan Thursday night in the semifinal by a score of 8-4.

Gushue has only lost three games at the event dating back to 2022.

Team Canada will face Team USA this afternoon at 2 p.m. for the bronze.

China advanced to Sunday's gold medal game beating the U.S. 7-4 Thursday night.

Japan, USA, China, and South Korea will join host Canada at the 2025 BKT Tires World Men's Curling Championship in Moose Jaw, Sask next March.

Big games today for Cochrane athletes

There are three games of note today in Cochrane's vibrant sports community. 

The Cochrane Cobras football team is seeking to qualify for high school provincials when they host Canmore today at 5 p.m. at the Cobras turf.

The Cobras are coming off a huge 21-20 divisional championship win last week against the powerful George McDougall Mustangs.

The Cobras are currently ranked third in the province among 3A schools.

Winnipeg Blue Bombers running back Brady Oliveira is the West Division finalist for the CFL's Most Outstanding Player Award and Most Outstanding Canadian. Oliveira led the league in rushing yards (1,353) for the second year in a row becoming the first player to accomplish the feat since Andrew Harris from 2017-2019. He also led the CFL in yards from scrimmage (1,829). Hamilton Tiger-Cats quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell and Montreal Alouettes defensive lineman Isaac Adeyemi-Berglund are the East Division finalists for Most Outstanding Player and Most Outstanding Canadian.
