Central Alberta stars fuel Alberta’s success at Canada Summer Games

From start to finish, Team Alberta made an impression at the 2025 Canada Summer Games in St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, bringing home a total of 86 medals and finishing fourth overall.

Central Albertans played a key role in the province’s success, delivering standout performances across multiple sports.

Central Alberta athletes join Team Canada in Italy for World Waterski Championships

Central Alberta will be represented at the 2025 IWWF World Waterski Championships in Recetto, Italy, this week as local athletes join Team Canada from August 27 to 31.

The 15-athlete roster includes reigning champions, past medalists, and rising stars, highlighting the depth of talent coming from across the country.

The Canadian team enters the championships following a strong performance at the 2023 World Championships, where the team captured silver in the Overall Team event and four individual medals.

Sharma earns silver at Peru Para Badminton, eyes Team Canada spot

Rocky View Badminton Academy’s head coach Rishav Sharma has returned from the 2025 Peru Para Badminton International with a silver medal in the men’s doubles. Partnering with Joshua Huang of the United States in the SU5 category, Sharma advanced to the final before falling to a pair from India.

“It was a very competitive tournament,” Sharma said. “We had strong players from Japan, Brazil, India and Spain. Making it to the final was a great experience.”

Soccer and tennis together for kids

Summer is still here, and both the Swift Current Soccer Association and the Swift Current Tennis Association have taken advantage of this with a free youth camp.

The camp ran through last week. Head Coach of the Swift Current Tennis Association, Kimberly Hartwig, says the camp was a great way for children of all ages and demographics to learn new sports.

The Niagara River Lions have done it again!

For the second year in a row, the River Lions have emerged as the victors of the Canadian Elite Basketball League Championship.

It was a fierce battle between the Calgary Surge and Niagara River Lions, with both teams having strong yet different motivations.

The Surge were keen on grabbing the title this year, as it was their third appearance in a row in the CEBL Championship Playoffs.

The River Lions on the other hand, were motivated to prove that they could accomplish again what they did last year.
