Strathmore darts team wins gold at local tournament
The Strathmore Tenners, a darts team based out of the local legion, won gold over the weekend.
The team took part in the District 9 senior darts playoffs and put six teams from around the area against each other. The event was held at the Strathmore Legion.
"We had teams from Drumheller, Calgary, and Strathmore," said Jenny Schumann, one of the members of the club. "I joined the legion in 1993 and have been playing darts here since then."
Schumann said it was a rough start to the tournament, as the Tenners lost their first three games in a row.
Final preparations for the 2024 Pan Continental Curling Championships underway
The Lacombe Curling Club is gearing up for the 2024 Pan Continental Curling Championships.
From Oct. 27 until Nov. 2, 36 teams from 21 countries are set to compete at the Lacombe Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex for the World Championships qualifier.
Two athletes represent Weyburn at the Chicago Marathon
The Bank of America Chicago Marathon was held on Sunday with over 52,000 participants. Two of the racers were Weyburn's own Glenn Rogers and Trevor Tessier.
They completed the 42.19 kilometre trek, with Tessier finishing with a time of three hours and fifty-one minutes, followed by Rogers with a time of three hours and fifty-five minutes.
Weekend hockey report (Impact earns first win)
A win and a loss to start the Saskatchewan Junior Female Hockey League season for the Southwest CMX Impact.
They beat the Lumsden Lynx 4-3 in overtime on Saturday in Gull Lake, before falling 2-1 in the re-match on Sunday.
The win is a bit of history for the Impact as they went 0-17 during the inaugural season of the SJFHL. Mya Brown's first ever junior goal in her 16th league game served as the overtime winner on Saturday.
Jordyn Cooper led the way for the Southwest squad with 2 goals and an assist over the two games.
Broncos Jacob Strizzi named SJHL Forward of the Week
For the second straight week, Humboldt Broncos Jacob Strizzi has been named the Saskatchewan Junior Hockey League (SJHL) Bourgault Forward of the Week.
Strizzi is currently on a six-game scoring streak after he found the back of the net in all three Broncos games this past week, including four goals in the back-to-back matchups with the Battlefords North Stars. He ended the week with eight points (5G-3A).
WCS Eagles end regular season victorious, playoffs begin Saturday
A strong finish to the season for the Weyburn Comprehensive School Eagles after a game on the weekend.
Heading into their final game of the regular season with a 4-1 record, the WCS Eagles football team entertained the Estevan Comprehensive School Elecs on Saturday. The Elecs entered the game with an 0-5 record.
Head Coach Jody Kerr said they held a special ceremony for the graduating players from each of the teams.
"Grade 12 players and their families were introduced and acknowledged for their contributions to their respective programs," he shared.
Bisons move to second place in the division after weekend split
The Carstar Okotoks Bisons find themselves in second place in their division after splitting the games over this past weekend.
The Medicine Hat Cubs are in first place with a 7-1-0 record while the Herd holds a 6-2-0 record which is good for second place in the HJHL Southern Division.
Okotoks were on the winning side on Friday night (Oct. 11) with a 5-2 win over the Agra Risk Wheatland Kings. Assistant captain Adam Kirkpatrick got on the board late in the first period to open up the scoring in the game. Kegan Law and Caden Scott both picked up helpers on the goal.
Oilers hit the road for the BCHL Showcase after weekend win
The NHL's Vancouver Caunucks are hosting the BCHL Showcase this week and the Okotoks Oilers will be featured in two games.
The Green and Gold head into the showcase coming off of a big 6-3 win over the Prince George Spruce Kings on Friday night (Oct. 11) at Viking Rentals Centre.
It was the first time the Oilers and Spruce Kings have ever met in a regular-season game, with Okotoks now fully integrated into the BCHL.
Team Semeniuk goes undefeated to win first U18 CurlSask Junior Tour event
Team Semeniuk, a newly formed curling team from North Battleford, has made an impressive debut on the U18 CurlSask Junior Tour by going undefeated in their first spiel. Competing at the U18 Sask Cup in Martensville, the team finished with a perfect 5-0 record, securing the tournament win.
