PCI Saints hockey team prepares for new season with optimism and leadership

The Portage Collegiate Institute (PCI) Saints hockey team is gearing up for an exciting season, kicking off today as they travel to Winnipeg to face the Beliveau Barracudas with high hopes and a strong veteran presence. Head Coach, Joanne Clark-Gillespie, expressed enthusiasm about the upcoming season after a productive preseason. 

"We've been on the ice for a month and participated in our division alignment tournament, where we declared our intention to play in Division Three this year."

Roughriders lock up home playoff game with dominating win over BC

For the first time since 2021, the Canadian Football League (CFL) playoffs will return to Saskatchewan. The only question that remains is whether it will be the Western Semi-Final or the Western Final.  

The Saskatchewan Roughriders secured the home playoff game with a dominating 39-8 win over the BC Lions in what could shape up to be a playoff preview. 

Broncos turn it around in weekend home and home against North Stars

It was a fast turnaround both in terms of time and performance for the Humboldt  Broncos this past weekend as they split their home and home against the  Battlefords North Stars.  

  

On Friday in the away game, the Broncos fell short in an 8-6 loss. Jacob Strizzi,  Gabreil Fillion and Josh Sale all pocketed a pair on the Broncos side, but the North  Stars took advantage of defensive gaps when they had to. 

  

Incredible turnout for Provincial Cross Country at Dixon

Well over 1000 athletes, coaches, parents and volunteers gathered in the hills north of Dixon for this year’s SHSAA Cross Country Provincial Meet hosted by the Carlton Trail Ski Club. 

It certainly isn’t the first time the trails have seen action as a cross-country venue, but its central location, challenging features, and volunteer support have made it one of the premier running courses for high school events.  

Bulldogs compete at BCHL Showcase

The Blackfalds Bulldogs lost a back-and-forth affair at the BCHL Showcase in Abbotsford, BC on Thanksgiving Monday, falling to the Vernon Vipers 6-4.

The Bulldogs found themselves down 2-0 early in the second but bounced back with goals by Alexander Dimitriadis (power play) and Tyler Chiovetti.

The Vipers would go up 4-2 early in the third but the Bulldogs were able to tie things up with back-to-back goals by Jack McAra.

Jake Giokas: The Heart of Vancouver Island Raiders’ Offensive Line

When looking for Moose Jaw-born football talent, it can even be found beyond the province of Saskatchewan.

Jake Giokas, 2022 Central Collegiate graduate and starting center of the Vancouver Island Raiders, is back home after an award-winning football season.

The Raiders are centered in Nanaimo, BC in the British Columbia Football Conference (BCFC) of the Canadian Junior Football League (CJFL). This season the team finished with a record of 4 - 6. Despite Missing the playoffs, this season was successful compared to previous years.

Sports Round-Up: Tuesday, October 15

Coming off a win over Everett and a loss to Saskatoon on the weekend, the Moose Jaw Warriors host the Spokane Chiefs tonight. Tonight will see 16-year-old local product Carson Deichert make his WHL debut. Deichert, a 3rd round draft pick in 2023, has 4 goals and 11 points in 6 games this season with the Winmar AAA Warriors.

On Sunday, the Winmar AAA Warriors lost 4-2 to the visiting Prince Albert Mintos.  

4A 9-A-Side football on Friday saw Moose Jaw's Vanier Vikings beat Gull Lake 62-28. and Lumsden beat Shaunavon 53-27.
