Saturday is Football Day in Ponoka!

It will be a busy day of football on Saturday in Ponoka.

Todd Lewis, head coach of the PeeWee and Bantam Broncs, says they have a full day planned.

"Not only are the PeeWee Broncs and the Bantam Broncs kicking off but also the Senior Broncs are kicking off all on the same day. It's never happened in our program's history before."

Lewis mentioned that the teams will be hitting the field with a grand entry.

Big Brothers Big Sisters hosting Rubber Duck Drop Fundraiser in Blackfalds

Cloudy with a chance of rubber ducks is the forecast for the Blackfalds region next weekend.

Big Brothers Big Sisters (BBBS) of Lacombe and District will be hosting its first annual Rubber Duck Drop Fundraiser on September 28 at Sterling Industries Park (soccer pitch).

The event will take place from 12 p.m. to 3 p.m., with the duck drop taking place at 2 p.m.

Executive Director Brianna Berthiaume explains that 1,000 rubber ducks will be dropped out of a helicopter and whoever's duck lands closest to the target will win half of the money raised.

Rocky Mountain House to not hold a by-election

The Town of Rocky Mountain House will not hold a by-election to fill the position of mayor. 

Following the resignation of Debbie Baich in August, the position was left vacant, and Deputy Mayor Marley Capraro was appointed as acting mayor.   

The town council agreed to request a by-election extension from the Minister of Municipal Affairs, Ric McIver.  

Rebels head coach Dave Struch excited for first full season behind the bench

Dave Struch is looking forward to his first full season as the head coach for the WHL's Red Deer Rebels.

Struch was named head coach after serving as interim head coach through the final month of the 2023-24 regular season and playoffs. Red Deer beat Medicine Hat in the first round of the playoffs before being swept by Saskatoon in Round 2.

The Rebels will open up the 2024-25 regular season at home against Lethbridge on Saturday night.

Struch was pleased with his team's preparation during the preseason.

Red Deer RCMP seek public assistance in locating missing 39-year-old

The Red Deer RCMP are seeking public assistance in locating missing 39-year-old Troy Garriock.

Troy was last seen in Red Deer on Sept. 11. There is concern for his well-being.

Troy Garriock is described as:

·        6 feet and approximately 209 pounds

·        Light complexion

·        Brown hair and brown eyes

Orange Ribbon Campaign returns to Red Deer as part of Truth and Reconciliation journey

Red Deerians are invited to pick up orange ribbons and tie them to a plant or tree in a place that holds significant meaning for them as a gesture of solidarity with the local Indigenous community, and an expression of grief for Canada and Red Deer’s residential school history.

Hundreds come out for Lacombe's Community Supper

After taking the summer off, the Backyard Friends Community Supper returned to the Lacombe Memorial Centre Wednesday night.

About 300 people attended the free supper, which is put on by volunteers with food donations provided by local businesses and organizations. The event is organized by the Lacombe & District Family and Community Support Services (FCSS).

The meal is a chance for local residents to connect with their neighbours and to meet new people.

The Backyard Friends Community Supper takes place at the LMC the third Wednesday of every month.

RDP partners with polytechnics for applied research symposium

Applied research experts from across the province attended the second annual Alberta Corridor Technical Symposium in Edmonton on Tuesday.   

The event, titled “Research Matters: Empowering Alberta Through Innovative Solutions,” was in partnership between the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology (NAIT), Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP), and the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT).
