Lacombe's Walk for Wellness and Suicide Prevention returns today

Lacombe's 13th annual Walk for Wellness and Suicide Prevention is shining a light on the importance of mental health.  

“Our goal is to inspire, inform, and support anyone who is living with mental health issues or has lost someone to suicide,” said Heather Jackson, Walk for Wellness and Suicide Prevention Event Coordinator.  

Rebels sign Cohen Poulin to WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement

The Red Deer Rebels have announced that forward Cohen Poulin has signed a WHL Scholarship and Development Agreement with the team.

Poulin, 17, was listed by the Rebels last year while recording 42 points (20 goals, 22 assists) in 36 games with the Fraser Valley Thunderbirds (BCEHL U18).

Rebels shut out in pre-season opener

The Red Deer Rebels kicked off their WHL pre-season Friday night against Calgary taking on the Hitmen at the Seven Chiefs Sportsplex at Tsuut’ina First Nation.

It was a low scoring affair, with the Hitmen squeeking out a 1-0 victory.

Ben Kindel scored the lone goal for Calgary 12:43 into the first period, beating Rebels goaltender Peyton Shore just as a Hitmen power play had ended.

Calgary outshot Red Deer 40-13. Then Rebels were 0-4 on the powerplay while the Hitmen went 0-6.

Ponoka Kinsmen Downhill Derby on today

The Ponoka Kinsmen Club 2024 Downhill Derby is today (Sept. 7).

It is open to racers aged 6-14 years old.

The Downhill Derby is a fun family event where spectators can watch go-cart races down 42 Avenue in the Riverside neighbourhood of Ponoka from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Canadian resident arrested in Quebec over alleged New York terror plot

When a father and son were arrested this summer in Ontario over an alleged terrorist plot, U.S. authorities say the news spooked a 20-year-old Pakistani national and Canadian resident named Muhammad Shahzeb Khan.

They say Khan used encrypted messaging to warn that because of the arrests "here in Toronto," there was a need to "lay low" on his own alleged plans: killing as many Jewish people as possible in New York around the Oct. 7 anniversary of Hamas' attack on Israel.

Manitoba Grand Chief Cathy Merrick dies after collapsing outside courthouse

Tributes poured in Friday for Grand Chief Cathy Merrick of the Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs, who died after collapsing outside the Winnipeg Law Courts building. 

Merrick, the first woman elected to the role, was talking to reporters about two court cases when she said she felt dizzy and fell to the ground. 

Fire and paramedic crews arrived, performed chest compressions and carried Merrick away on a stretcher to an ambulance, which sped off with its siren on.

Red Deer County breaks ground for $241 million flour mill  

Red Deer County is contributing to the province's food processing sector, after officially breaking ground for a $241 million flour milling facility in Springbrook on Friday (Sept. 6).  

The facility will mill about 750 metric tonnes of wheat from western Canadian farmers into flour daily and have the capacity to add two more flour mills as demand increases.  

Front counter wait times expected to increase at Red Deer RCMP detachment starting next week

Be prepared to spend extra time waiting at the downtown Red Deer RCMP detachment front counter starting Monday, as the customer service counter will be under construction.

Additionally, there may be reduced parking availability and extra noise at the detachment.

To alleviate wait times, Red Deerians are reminded of a number of common detachment services that can be completed online or by phone.

ASIRT seeking witnesses of fatal police-involved shooting in Wetaskiwin

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is continuing to investigate a fatal shooting involving Wetaskiwin RCMP officers and a 15-year-old.   

On Aug. 30, ASIRT was directed to begin an investigation.   

At 12:28 a.m., that day, police received a 911 call from a 15-year-old male who stated that he was being followed by people who wanted to harm him.
