Sunny celebrates his own special day

Sunny, the lovable mascot for Sunny 94.1, took the day off yesterday to celebrate National Mascots Day.

Now that he’s back at work, we’re shining a spotlight on this ray of sunshine to highlight all the great work he does not just at the station, but in the community, too.

Sunny is 19 years old and has been bringing smiles to Central Alberta since 2006.

This bright mascot loves all sunny things like SunChips, SunnyD and, especially, eggs sunny side up.

Ponoka power outages scheduled for today and Thursday morning

The Town of Ponoka has announced a temporary power outage today, weather permitting, from 9 a.m. to approximately 1 p.m. in parts of town.

The planned outage will affect properties on the following streets as crews conduct electrical maintenance:

  • On 38 Avenue Close between 46 Street and the Battle River

  • On 46 Street between 38 Avenue Close and the alley west of 37 Avenue (between 46 Street and the Battle River)

$3.4 million to support USask's Integrated Genomics for Sustainable Animal Agriculture and Environmental Stewardship Project

Canada's Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food Heath MacDonald and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison today announced $3.4 million over four years to support the development of two new facilities at the University of Saskatchewan (USask) which includes the Omics Resource Centre at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine (WCVM) and Beef Reprotech facilities at the Livestock and Forage Centre of Excellence (LFCE).

Canadians spending less time with friends, especially those of working age: StatCan

A Statistics Canada reports says Canadians are spending less time with friends than ever, with the decline sharpest among the working-age demographic.

The data released Tuesday show that in 2022, only 19.3 per cent of Canadians saw friends on an average day, down from 47.9 per cent in 1986.

The questions to those in the survey asks if they were with a friend or family member in person, separate from communicating using technology such as phone, email, or social media.

Carney guided the G7 through the 'diplomatic Rockies,' says expert

Prime Minister Mark Carney pulled off a successful performance hosting the G7 summit in Kananaskis, Alta., say some world leaders and foreign policy experts commenting on his perceived pragmatism and savviness.

Fen Osler Hampson, international affairs professor at Carleton University, said Carney guided the G7 "through the diplomatic Rockies," navigating "shifting weather" on the global front and avoiding "avalanches and treacherous cliffs."

Wolf Creek Public Schools appoints Ryan Stephens as assistant facilities manager

Wolf Creek Public Schools is pleased to announce the appointment of Ryan Stephens to the position of assistant facilities manager.

Stephens brings more than 15 years of experience in the plumbing and gasfitting trades to the role, including over eight years working in both residential and commercial settings. As a certified journeyman plumber and Class B gasfitter, Stephens has built a strong reputation for technical excellence, reliability and leadership.

David Martin appointed assistant principal of Ponoka Elementary

David Martin has been appointed as the new assistant principal of Ponoka Elementary School, beginning in the 2025–26 school year, according to Wolf Creek Public Schools (WCPS).

Martin brings a wide-ranging background in education as a classroom teacher, school leader, division-level curriculum coordinator and university instructor. Most recently, he has been teaching pre-service educators at Red Deer Polytechnic. Before that, Martin served as assistant principal at both St. Marguerite School and St. Joseph High School in Red Deer.

Lacombe police recover stolen truck in Leduc; one still missing

Yesterday morning (June 16), Lacombe Police received a report from a resident who discovered that both his personal truck and his roommate’s work truck had been stolen from their home in the 5200 block of 49th Street. 

The vehicles were last seen parked at approximately 10 p.m. the previous evening — one in the driveway and the other on the street in front of the home. 

ADOPT funding announced

Saskatchewan's Agriculture Demonstration of Practices and Technologies (ADOPT) projects, and Strategic Field Program (SFP) benefit from Federal-Provincial Sustainable CAP funding.

Farmers benefit from the practical, short-term research projects conducted through the ADOPT, which they can then use on their own operation.

For the 2024-25 fiscal year, more than $1.4 million was invested in six SFP and 32 ADOPT projects.
