Pilot error, poor weather cited in fatal Cochrane area plane crash

The Transportation Safety Board of Canada (TSB) has identified poor weather conditions and time pressures as contributing factors in a plane crash that occurred west of Calgary on July 28, 2023.

The incident involved a Piper PA-32R aircraft that had departed from Springbank Airport, bound for Salmon Arm, British Columbia.

Investigators report that the pilot did not fully comprehend the weather conditions at the time of takeoff and continued flying despite poor visibility.

Petition started in High River over the proposed loan for the Aquatic expansion

Manitoba man acquitted 50 years after murder conviction

A Manitoba man convicted of murder 50 years ago has been acquitted.

Clarence Woodhouse was found guilty in 1974 of fatally beating and stabbing a restaurant worker in downtown Winnipeg.

He was granted parole in 1983 and filed last year for a ministerial review of his conviction.

His lawyers argued a confession Woodhouse supposedly made was in fluent English, although he primarily spoke Saulteaux.

Spitzee Elementary School in High River is paying tribute to the Blackfoot Nation with a mural and Indigenous bustle added to their centre of learning.

The mural was painted by local Blackfoot artist Jared Tailfeathers, who also contributed a tree carving that was recently unveiled at George Lane Park.

A bustle (a piece of Indigenous regalia) was also given to the school by the Barstad family.

Elder Virginia Aldoff Pinay was in attendance as she has played a big part in Spitzee school's culture in her role as the students' Kohkum (grandmother).

Okotoks RCMP stresses pedestrian safety after multiple collisions in the last few months

Autumn is in full swing, and the leaves are changing and beginning to fall.

With autumn comes shorter days, which impacts visibility and driving conditions.

Because of that, the Okotoks RCMP are reminding drivers to remain vigilant and help keep pedestrians safe.

In a media release from October 2, the Okotoks RCMP reminds drivers to be mindful, particularly in school or playground zones and especially during early mornings or late afternoons when there are kids making their way to school.

Decision reached on whether liquor is to be sold in Alberta grocery and convenience stores

The Government of Alberta has announced that a decision has been made regarding the potential sale of liquor in grocery and convenience stores.

Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally has accepted recommendations to maintain the province's current liquor retail model.

The recommendation was made by an MLA Advisory Committee who consulted with business owners, industry representatives, and experts. 

Rowan House details the growth of its programs in annual report

The Rowan House Society recently released its 2024/2024 Report to the Community.

Each year, the report provides a look at the organization's efforts to support individuals affected by domestic violence and abuse, with information on Rowan House's various programs as well as a look at its revenue and expenses.

Their 24-hour support line saw a total of 2,294 calls or texts, about a 15 per cent increase from the year prior, totalling 15,779 minutes.

Rowan House’s Safe at Home Program was also reintroduced during the last fiscal year.
