Portion of North Railway Street closed until late July for construction

A portion of North Railway Street is closed due to construction, beginning today (May 26).

This work is part of the Foothills Okotoks Regional Water Project, and will cause North Railway Street to be closed from 40 St E and 48 St E.

The closure is expected to be in place from today (May 26) until July 20.

There will be detours in place at all times while the work is being completed, with eastbound traffic being redirected north onto 48 Street East to Milligan Drive.

Alberta, Ottawa spending $7 million to fund six new urban wildfire teams

Nearly $7 million in provincial and federal spending will create six teams of urban wildfire crews, Alberta's public safety minister announced Friday.

Speaking in Strathmore, Alta., Mike Ellis told a news conference that having six more teams means Alberta will have up to eight specialized crews that can respond to fires threatening communities.

"We've witnessed the immense destruction wildfires can cause at home and in other parts of the world," Ellis said.

Closures along Milligan Drive to continue until September

Milligan Drive will see intermittent lane closures over the course of a few months.

It's due to construction work between Visser Way and Northridge Drive, expected to be completed in September.

The project will be completed in two phases, with pathway and lane closures expected during that time along Milligan Drive near Veterans Way.

Drivers will already have noticed the closures, which started late last week.

King Charles to follow in mother's footsteps in delivering throne speech

King Charles is set to open a new session of Parliament on Tuesday, seated in a throne that incorporates a piece of English walnut from Windsor Great Park, a preserve of his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth.

The Royal Family connection is especially appropriate given that the Queen was the first sovereign to deliver a speech from the throne in Canada, a role usually fulfilled by the Governor General.

Canada Post, union expected to resume talks in a few days as overtime ban continues

Talks between Canada Post and negotiators from its union are expected to resume over the next few days, its union said Sunday after the two parties met amid warnings of mail delivery delays tied to a national ban on overtime for postal workers.

In an afternoon statement, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers said its negotiators had "worked hard to carefully evaluate" Canada Post's latest offers and prepare responses ahead of the day's meeting with the employer and the mediators.
