How is the new no cellphone in class policy working in the Foothills?

The new no cell phone or mobile devices in classrooms across the province policy seems to be going well in the Foothills School Division.

The policy was implemented across all Alberta schools by a ministerial order by the Minister of Education Demetrios Nicolaides earlier this year.

It went into effect at the beginning of the 2024-25 school year.

FSD Superintendent Chris Fuzessy says while it's only been three weeks, it's been well received.

It was a record-breaking year for the Okotoks Terry Fox Run

Okotoks saw a great turnout for the 44th annual Terry Fox Run on Sunday (Sept. 15), both with the number of participants and funds raised.

This was Steve Preece’s first time organizing the Okotoks run, and it was held in a new location.

He says Sheep River Park proved to be a great starting point for the run, especially with the weather turning out the way it did.

"The new site proved to be terrific in the sense that it's a lovely setting, lots of room for people to gather, and it's a pretty run to do."

Fill a bag for the Okotoks Food Bank this weekend

The Okotoks Food Bank's largest food drive of the year is coming up.

The annual event is organized by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS) and officially began on Wednesday (Sept. 18) when they left bags on people's front doors to be filled with donations for the food bank.

One of the coordinators of the food drive, Rob Court, says his team will be dropping a bag and an instruction tag off at every home in Okotoks, as well as the Heritage Pointe and Artesia neighbourhoods.

India gives another two month extension on duty-free imports of yellow peas

There's some good news for Canada's pulse sector as industry representatives gather this week in Winnipeg for the Annual Pulse and Special Crops Convention.

India announced late last week that it would once again extend the timeline for duty-free imports of yellow peas until December 31st, 2024.

India originally lifted the duties on pea imports on a temporary basis in December of 2023 and has continued to issue temporary extensions since then, while the import duty exemption on lentils is in place through March 31, 2025.

A bear went for a stroll through Okotoks last night ▶️

A black bear was spotted in Okotoks last night (Sept. 17).

A few Okotokians posted videos of the bear to Facebook, including Leslee Horniachek, whose security camera captured footage of the black bear walking across her front lawn and a driveway in the Westmount neighbourhood at 2:48 a.m.

According to Horniachek, she initially thought it was a prank when she first saw the bear on her camera.
