Casting call could turn a Cochrane dog into a huge star

Cochrane’s next big movie star might just have four legs and some great basketball skills.

Robert Vince, creator of the “Air Bud” franchise, has announced an open casting call for the title role in the 15th film, “Air Bud Returns.”

For the first time, producers are inviting the public to audition their dogs for the iconic part once played by a golden retriever named Buddy.

Audition videos should be 60 to 90 seconds long, showing the dog performing basic commands like “sit,” “stay,” and “come,” along with any special tricks or basketball moves.

DQ’s Miracle Treat Day a sweet way to help children’s hospitals

On Thursday, August 14, Cochrane residents will have a chance to support Alberta’s children’s hospitals while enjoying a Blizzard treat at Dairy Queen.

“Miracle Treat Day” is our biggest fundraiser of the year for the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation,” says Tim Morrison, longtime owner of the DQ location at 14 Westside Dr. “We have a decades-long relationship with them, raising money every August, and it’s just a fun way to get things done.”

Bear sightings shut down Kananaskis trail

Several bear encounters, including reports of hikers being bluff charged, have led to a trail closure and multiple warnings in Kananaskis Country.

The Bill Milne Trail between Kananaskis Village and Mount Kidd RV Park is closed until further notice after grizzly and black bears were spotted in the area, including one incident involving a bluff charge. The stretch from Mount Kidd RV Park to Wedge Pond remains open.

Bear warnings are also in effect for Ribbon Creek Trail, the remaining open section of the Bill Milne Trail, Mount Kidd RV Park, and Kovach Trail.

Alberta government appeals injunction of transgender health-care law

Alberta is appealing a temporary injunction of a law banning doctors from providing gender-affirming care to youth.

A judge granted the injunction in June, ruling the provincial law raises serious Charter issues that need to be hashed out in an ongoing court challenge of the legislation.

Court of King's Bench Justice Allison Kuntz said the law is likely to cause irreparable harm to gender-diverse youth and she didn't find the contrary evidence submitted by the province to be overwhelming.

Former Alberta health agency CEO says false claims may compromise investigation

The former head of Alberta’s front-line health agency says she's aware of misinformation that may compromise a third-party investigation into a multimillion-dollar health contracting scandal.

Athana Mentzelopoulos, once the CEO of Alberta Health Services, filed a lawsuit against the provincial government in February alleging wrongful dismissal.

She said in a letter Friday that claims are circulating publicly that she was unwilling to meet with retired Manitoba judge Raymond Wyant for an interview in his investigation.

Lettuce eaters bring their crunch game to FoodFest

Eddie Brown came into an unparalleled lettuce-eating contest at FoodFest with high hopes of snatching a second title — but this time, his crunch-time dreams were shredded by Jetta Derenoski, who blew the competition out of the water.

Twelve brave contestants faced off to see who could devour an entire head of iceberg lettuce the fastest in a timed event. Only Derenoski managed to finish hers entirely, leaving the rest of the field a little green around the edges.
