RMA says provincial policies are crippling rural Alberta

Paul McLauchlin, president of the Rural Municipalities Association (RMA), says rural municipalities have been forced to face the brunt of provincial policy decisions to subsidize the oil and gas industry in addition to other core funding cuts and downloads by the province.

It's now reached the point where it is jeopardizing infrastructure vital to all Albertans.

We're talking about roads, bridges, and water/wastewater networks.

Stepping up 6th annual Sweat for a Vet

The Wayfinders Wellness Society has expanded its annual Sweat for a Vet Boot Camp, set for Nov. 6, to help raise funds to support services it provides veterans and first responders suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

WWS has set a $15,000 fundraising goal and is looking for teams to help raise funds by participating in a friendly competition for prizes. It's a way to ensure they can continue to offer their programs free of charge to veterans, first responders, and their families.

Cochrane Public Library introduces new Homeschool Helper Kits

The Cochrane Public Library has unveiled its brand new Homeschool Helper Kits.

There are now 20 different resources to borrow that feature a variety of subjects made specifically to support homeschool learning in the community.

The Library’s program and engagement manager Carmen Erison says these kits will go a long way in helping the surging homeschool community in Cochrane.

The Strike at the Port of Vancouver may be over, but we could see more disruptions to Canada's Supply Chain.

Late Friday, the Grain Workers Union Local 333 agreed to a tentative four-year deal with the Vancouver Terminal Elevator Association taking them through December 31, 2027.

The four-day strike involved over 600 workers at the six bulk grain export terminals at the Port owned by Viterra and Richardson International, G3, Cargill and Alliance Grain.

Western Grain Elevators Association noted that workers were back on the job Saturday morning.

Cochrane library launches automatic renewal service

The worry of returning material to the Cochrane Public Library (CPL) on time has been eased, thanks to the launch of an automatic item renewal service.

Effective immediately, any items owned by CPL that do not have holds placed on them will be automatically renew up to two times.

This means patrons can enjoy their favorite books, movies, and other materials without the constant worry of due dates. When an item is renewed, the borrower will receive a notification via email or text to keep them informed.

Saints undefeated heading into final regular season game

The St. Clair Saints Football team, which includes Cochrane o-lineman Leighten Boynton, has clinched first in the Ontario Football Conference (OFC) of the Canadian Junior Football League for the fourth consecutive season.

On Sept. 28, the Saints defeated the Ottawa Sooners, 40-10, to not only clinch but remain undefeated in their 2024 campaign. With a 7-2 record, the second-place London Beefeaters were the only team with a slim chance of catching them.
