Sask. Government implements a co-pay model for the Cochlear Implant Program

The Saskatchewan Government released a report on October 13, stating that effective December 1, 2022, Saskatchewan is moving to implement a co-pay model for the Cochlear Implant Program to help residents who need to replace their devices.

A cochlear implant is a surgically implanted device that processes sound to partially restore hearing. The Sask. Government says in the release that the external processor typically needs to be replaced every five to seven years at a cost of between $8,000 and $12,000.

Third flight of displaced Ukrainians in the works

On October 11, Immigration and Career Training Minister Jeremy Harrison announced that registration is now open for a third humanitarian flight destined for Saskatchewan. A government release revealed that the flight is being arranged in partnership with the humanitarian organizations Solidaire, and Open Arms and is expected to arrive in Regina on October 25. 

Additional funding on the way for recruitment and retention of early childhood educators

Three new daycare centres are in the planning stages in Humboldt, Bruno and Muenster. In addition to the challenges of raising funds and meeting regulatory requirements, advocates for expanded childcare options in rural Saskatchewan need also be concerned about the availability of qualified care personnel. Now the provincial and federal governments are going to put more money toward that issue. 

Saskatchewan Health Authority looking to bolster volunteer numbers

The Saskatchewan Health Authority is putting the call out for volunteers to support its efforts on a variety of health care fronts. The Authority is seeking volunteers  to assist staff, patients, clients, families and visitors in its acute care facilities, long term care homes and community programs. Options include pet support programs, assisting patients navigating through acute care settings, and supporting Meals on Wheels programs.

Broncos focus on this weekend's challenges

The Humboldt Broncos head out tonight looking to shake off their first season loss in the dying seconds of Tuesday's game with La Ronge. 

The Horsemen are in Nipawin to challenge the Hawks. The Hawks struggled back into the game late against the Yorkton Terriers to pull out a 7-5 win for their third of the season. It will be the first regular season meeting for the two. Humboldt notched a 4-1 win over the Hawks in pre-season action.

Health care targeting rural and remote health care vacancies

Health care facilities in Humboldt, Wadena, Wynyard and Watrous are among those in rural Saskatchewan hoping to take advantage of a provincial initiative. In collaboration with the Ministry of Health, the Saskatchewan Health Authority is advancing the Government of Saskatchewan's commitment to create more full-time positions in rural and northern communities across the province. It’s part of  Saskatchewan's Health Human Resources Action Plan, says a government release.

Misappropriated funds leads to firing in Horizon School Division

In its latest report of losses of public money, the province cited an issue dating back to March 23, 2022 involving the Horizon School Division.

The instance involved the misappropriation of $4620 by an employee. An investigation by the Division confirmed that the money involved was to have been deposited to a banking institution, but those funds never made it into the account. 

SHSAA Provincial Cross Country championship goes on Saturday

The SHSAA Provincial Cross Country championship is being hosted Saturday, October 15, 2022. The championship will be contested at Wapiti Valley Ski Hill near Melfort. 

October 10 – 15th has been proclaimed School Sport Week by the Minister of Education, Dustin Duncan. The championship will conclude a week’s long promotion of high school sport across the province. 

Premier Says Provincial Government set to take on Feds in new policy paper

Premier Scott Moe has drawn a line in the sand with a document that reference the stance. His Sask Party Government has released a discussion paper entitled  "Drawing the Line: Defending Saskatchewan's Economic Autonomy" in an effort to galvanize the resolve to protect the province’s economy from what he perceives to be federal interference. Moe cautions that unchecked federal policies could cost the province as much as $111 billion by 2035.

SaskEnergy flaring near Carmel on October 12 & 13, 2022

SaskEnergy will be conducting controlled natural gas flares at its block valve site in the RM of Humboldt, about one kilometre southwest of the Village of Carmel, on Wednesday, October 12 and Thursday, October 13, from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. both days, subject to change based on operating requirements.

Residents and drivers in the area may see a 40-foot flame being emitted from the flare stack temporarily attached to SaskEnergy’s infrastructure.
