Kenora Mayor happy with recent vaccine rates

High vaccination rates among area residents and low daily cases counts have provided a sense of hope of a somewhat normal summer for residents.

As of last Wednesday, the province of Ontario moved into Step Two of the provinces Roadmap to Reopen after the province successfully passed the vaccine thresholds needed to enter Step Two. Those numbers were 70 per cent of residents needing at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine and 20 per cent being fully vaccinated.

Things are looking very good: NWHU on upcoming school year

This past year was an unusual year for students as they bounced between limited in-class learning and online-based learning, which created a struggle for students. A province-wide mass vaccination distribution plan has made in-class learning for the upcoming 2021-2022 school year more of a reality.

The Northwestern Health Unit Medical Officer of Health Dr. Kit Young Hoon commented on the likeliness of in-class learning for the upcoming school year in a media briefing yesterday.

Manitoba seeing lowest daily COVID-19 case count since March

On the same day as achieving a vaccination milestone, the province is sharing another COVID-19 accomplishment.

Public Health is announcing the 36 new COVID-19 cases Tuesday, one of the lowest case counts the province has seen all year.

Exactly four weeks ago 251 new cases were announced in Manitoba. In March cases spiked, but June and July have seen a steady decrease in cases, putting Manitoba on track to see the lowest daily case count since the fall of 2020.

Folklorama going around the world in three days

One of Winnipeg's most popular festivals is finding a way to share traditions with Manitobans for free this year.

Streaming live from the Burton Cummings Theatre for three nights starting August 6, Folklorama is presenting free online programming this year.

"Each night will feature a different region Asia and Africa is on Friday, the Americas are on Saturday, and we wind up with Europe on Sunday," Folklormama Executive Director Theresa Cotroneo says.

Fewer COVID-19 tickets given out over Canada Day weekend

The lowest number of COVID-19 enforcement tickets and warnings that have been seen in weeks was given out last week in Manitoba.

Between June 28 to July 4, 58 warnings and 24 tickets were given out to Manitobans. The week before saw 62 warnings and 37 tickets.

Of the tickets, one is for failure to wear a mask in an indoor public place and one is given to a grocery store in Steinbach. The other 22 tickets are individual tickets.

July 6: One new positive COVID-19 case confirmed

The Northwestern Health Unit has confirmed one new positive COVID-19 case in the region.

The positive COVID-19 case has been reported from the District of Rainy River area.

Follow up with the persons involved and their contacts has started according to protocol. Anyone who is identified as a contact for these cases will be contacted directly.

Currently, there are 4 active cases in the NWHU catchment area. Two cases in the Sioux Lookout Health Region and one active case each in the Kenora and Rainy River Health Regions.

Canadian government announces new travel rules for those fully vaccinated

Starting on July 5, any people entering Canada on a flight that meet the proper requirements will be exempt from being in quarantine for two weeks. 

Travellers who are eligible to enter Canada, are asymptomatic, have been fully vaccinated by the approved vaccines, and meet all entry requirements can proceed to their destination with no further delay.
