Community generosity powers Crossfield hamper success

It was another successful year for the Crossfield Hamper Program as they handed out hampers to over 80 families in need this holiday season.

The Crossfield and Madden Food Bank spearhead the program. Angela Wigglesworth who is a co-founder of the food bank is thankful for how it went.

"We were able to give out 87 hampers this Christmas with the incredible generosity of the community as the driving force, we are very fortunate to still partner with the Crossfield Fire Department, who delivered all of our Christmas hampers for us."

Update: Thick fog and freezing temperatures hit Airdrie – What to expect

A previously issued fog advisory by Environment Canada for Airdrie, Crossfield, and surrounding areas in Rocky View County ended on Tuesday morning.

The advisory coincided with a temperature drop and a shift in weather patterns. Monday evening will bring increasing cloud cover, with a 30 per cent chance of flurries overnight. Fog patches will persist, and winds up to 15 km/h will contribute to a low of minus 18. Wind chill values will be near minus 13 this evening and minus 23 overnight.

Residency rules to end? Hockey Alberta proposes changes for 2025

Hockey Alberta has said it plans to introduce significant updates to player eligibility, registration, and movement rules, giving families more flexibility and choice starting in the 2025-2026 season.

For the first time in over 25 years, first-time hockey players would no longer be tied to residency-based boundaries, allowing them to choose the Minor Hockey Association (MHA) that best fits their needs. These changes aim to adapt to the evolving sports landscape, where MHAs face increasing competition to recruit and retain players.

Crossfield Hamper Program preparing 100 Christmas hampers

The Crossfield Hampers Program is now in full swing and needs your help with donations, with Christmas just around the corner.

The Crossfield and Madden Food Bank are currently accepting applications for those in the area in need this holiday season.

Cheryl Longeway and Angela Wigglesworth who are co-founders of the food bank talked about the Christmas hampers.

"Last year, we gave out 84 Christmas hampers," stated Longeway. "They year we are preparing to give out around 100."

Education report and finances highlighted by neighbouring school division

At its latest council meeting, Chinook's Edge Board of Trustees hear reports on their financial statements and Annual Education Results Report.

The Board accepted the financial figures that Treasurer Nadeem Altaf provided for the fiscal year that concluded on August 31, 2024. Both community members on the Board's audit committee and independent auditors from MNP attended the Board meeting.

"The division received $139,232,915 in revenue, while its expenses were $138,280,314 for the 2023-24 school year," stated Chinook's Edge.

Freezing fog settles over Airdrie and area highways

A thick blanket of freezing fog has settled over the Airdrie and surrounding area.

Near zero visibility freezing fog is occurring in some areas. Fog developed overnight and is expected to persist until late this morning. Visibility may be significantly and suddenly reduced to near zero. If visibility is reduced while driving, slow down, watch for taillights ahead and be prepared to stop.

Airdrie preparing for weekend winter walloping

Airdrie and the surrounding areas are under a snowfall warning as southern Alberta prepares for a significant winter storm.

According to Environment Canada, snow will begin early Friday morning and spread northward, bringing a long period of heavy snowfall.

The area could see 5 to 10 cm of snow by Saturday morning, with heavier snow arriving early Saturday. Another 10 to 15 centimetres is expected by Saturday evening, totalling 15 to 25 centimetres by the time the storm eases overnight into Sunday.
