Saturday Rainwatchers: showers give way to seasonal Thanksgiving weekend weather
The first round of measurable precipitation for some areas in about three weeks moved through the region late Saturday afternoon and evening.
“A trough of low pressure was crossing through the province, and it brought an area of shower activity that developed late in the day,” explained CMOS Accredited Weathercaster Chris Sumner. “The totals are not that significant, but enough to have our Rainwatchers checking their gauges Sunday morning.”
Thankful Hearts: To give and to receive during Foodgrains Bank Learning Tour in Nepal
Early in 2024, Manitoba Regional Rep for the Canadian Foodgrains Bank, Gordon Janzen, participated in a CFB learning tour to Nepal, along with five other Manitobans keenly interested in the ag sector and the projects affiliated with the Foodgrain Bank.
Janzen had strong connections with that part of the world as his parents spent three years in India and then in Nepal; his father a doctor and his mother, a nurse. Janzen himself spent a number of years in both countries and so was not unfamiliar with the cultures and dynamics of Nepal.
Manitoba 4-H revives Japanese exchange program after 4-year hiatus
The Manitoba 4-H program was able to revive their Japanese student exchange program this past summer through the York-Benimaru Foundation.
“This was our first year back since 2019, so we were happy to send ten 4-H members over there and two chaperones,” reports Shannon Carvey, Executive Director for 4-H Manitoba. “And then in August, we had 20 Japanese students arrive in Manitoba and they were all hosted in homes of 4-H families.”
Carvey says they are really grateful for the return of this exchange program and the unique experience offered to these students.

The Miller Aces and Morden Thunder are Provincial A-AA-AAA High School Soccer champions. Miller defeated the Garden Valley Zodiacs 3-1 in the girls final while Morden shaded GVC 2-1 in the boys final Saturday in Minnedosa. Midfielder Lindsey Miller of the Aces and midfielder Elliot Haines of the Thunder were named the tournament MVP’s.

Gruelling days and gratitude for Canadian line workers helping with hurricane outages
Stéphan Perreault and his team have been helping restore power in North Carolina since Hurricane Helene hit in late September, and they don't expect to be heading home any time soon.

Oral histories of past residents preserved in Neubergthal Heritage Foundation project
The oral histories of more than a dozen past residents of the village have been preserved in a project initiated by the Neubergthal Heritage Foundation. University of Manitoba Department of History Ph.D student Jonathan Hildebrand interviewed the participants who grew up and lived in the community as early as the 1930s and as late as the 80s.

Helen Neufeld, 94, of Winnipeg formerly of Crystal City passed away Tuesday, October 8th at Kildonan Personal Care Centre. She is survived by 5 children and their families. She was predeceased by her husband George Neufeld.
The funeral service for Helen Neufeld will be held Wednesday, 11am at Friends Funeral Service, 2146 Main Street, Winnipeg with burial at Crystal City Cemetery on Friday, October 18th at 11am.
Viewing will be at Friends Funeral Service prior to the service.
Former public safety minister didn't know about delayed spy warrant, he tells inquiry
Former public safety minister Bill Blair told a federal inquiry Friday he had no knowledge about delays in approving a spy service warrant in 2021 that may have included references to people in his own government.
A commission of inquiry into foreign interference has heard that it took 54 days for the Canadian Security Intelligence Service warrant application to be approved by Blair.
The average turnaround time for such applications is four to 10 days.
