Estevan firefighters respond to series of alarms, collisions and rescues

Estevan Fire Rescue responded to a series of calls over several days, including fire alarms, carbon monoxide incidents, vehicle collisions, and an elevator rescue. While no major injuries were reported, crews assisted in multiple situations across the city and surrounding areas.

On Feb. 18, around 9 a.m., crews were dispatched to a commercial fire alarm in the south-central area of the city. Smoke was found in the stairwell, which was determined to be caused by a mechanical failure in a pump. No fire was occurring, and crews assisted in ventilating the building.

Fraud, break-ins, drug charges among weekend police calls

Estevan police responded to a series of incidents over the weekend, including hit-and-runs, break-ins, fraud, drug-related charges and breaches of court conditions.

Officers received a report on Feb. 21 of a hit-and-run in the Pleasantdale area. A parked vehicle was struck on the street, damaging the driver’s side mirror. Police attended the scene, and the matter remains under investigation.

Another hit-and-run was reported from Feb. 7 in a grocery store parking lot. A statement was obtained, and the investigation is ongoing.

Chamber of Commerce Survey shows business satisfaction with city budget

The city of Estevan is taking a look at its budget, with the final version to be shown in tonight's council meeting.

From that, the Estevan Chamber of Commerce has put together a survey of local businesses and what they think of the upcoming budget.

Executive Director Merissa Scarlett says they learned a bit even if the responses were limited.

With just two weeks left until the winner is announced and two days until voting begins, the two events are the only chance Liberal supporters will have to see the candidates together.

Former central banker Mark Carney, former finance minister Chrystia Freeland, former House leader Karina Gould and former MP Frank Baylis are the only candidates still in the contest. 

Multiple Canadian cities hold rallies to mark third anniversary of Ukraine invasion

People gathered in cities across Canada on Sunday on the eve of the third anniversary of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, amid fears of a withdrawal of U.S. support. 

Rallies were held at city halls, museums and community centres across the country to mark a global day of action as the war in Ukraine enters its fourth year. 

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is set to be in Kyiv on Monday, one of 13 foreign leaders attending a summit on peace and security for Ukraine.

Valentine’s Day fun for February’s Classroom of the Month!

We had an amazing time at Westview School celebrating February’s Classroom of the Month with Mr. Charlton’s Grade 2 class! Warm weather bringing rain to the southeast which could lead to slippery conditions

One unexpected part of being out of the cold is some rain which is expected to be passing over the southeast on Monday.

That's less than a week after record-breaking cold was seen, with the sudden shift in temperatures also seeing a shift in expected precipitation.
