Trombley receives honour from Saskatchewan School Boards Association

Audrey Trombley, the South East Cornerstone Public School Division Board Chair, was recently recognized for her contributions when she was presented with the Saskatchewan School Boards Association’s Award of Distinction. The award is the highest recognition from the SSBA and is awarded every year to a school board member who demonstrates outstanding service and has made signification contributions to enhance education.  

New info-sharing methods being adopted by city following departure of Estevan Mercury

The City of Estevan is clarifying how they'll be sharing their information with the public following the closure of Estevan's newspaper.

Estevan needs to meet certain legislative requirements for sharing some info with the public, including The Cities Act, The Elections Act, the Tax Enforcement Act, and the Land Development Act.

Instead, those legally required notices will be placed on two bulletin boards, one at city hall and the other at Leisure services.

Stolen truck, domestic assaults among Estevan police weekend cases

Estevan Police Service officers responded to a busy weekend of calls, including arrests for intoxication, multiple assaults, impaired driving, and ongoing investigations into thefts and hit-and-run collisions.

On Jan. 24, police arrested a local woman on outstanding warrants. Due to her significant level of intoxication and inability to care for herself or participate in the release process, she was held in custody until sober.

Estevan Fire Rescue answers calls for alarms, minor vehicle fire

Estevan Fire Rescue had an eventful week, responding to multiple calls, including false alarms and a minor vehicle fire.

On Jan. 20, crews attended three incidents. Just after 11 a.m., EFR was dispatched to a commercial fire alarm in northwest Estevan. The alarm was triggered by a sprinkler system, believed to be due to a fault.

Around 3 p.m., crews responded to a residential fire alarm in the RM of Estevan, later confirmed to be a cooking-related alarm. EFR stood down as their assistance wasn’t required.

RCMP report fatal rollover in the Carievale area

The Carnduff RCMP are investigating a fatal rollover which occurred over the weekend.

On January 25, at around 11:50 a.m., a report was received byCarnduff RCMP of a single-vehicle rollover on Rural Road 1312, northeast of Carievale.

When they responded, officers found that the driver was the only occupant of the vehicle, and was later declared deceased by EMS at the scene.

The driver has been identified as a 33-year-old from Argyle, SK. His family has been notified.

With all the cold weather recently my country cruising has been limited. Yesterday I made up for it by getting on the road for a few hours. I ended up in the hills north of Arcola which was a little tricky at times depending on which road you attempted to go down. I got through a couple small drifts that didn't cause too much attention, but then I came around a curve and immediately knew I was turning around. When you have this thought that quick, you know it's not something you want to take on.

Extending coal power in Estevan part of "all-approaches" strategy for power generation: Lori Carr

Estevan has seen a sharp turn in its coal industry's future with the recent announcement that the province will be expanding Boundary Dam's power unit operational lifetime.

After meeting with the local workers, the province announced that they would seek to extend those units past their end of life.
