Estevan dodges cold warnings from latest burst of chilly air into Saskatchewan
Across the province, extreme cold warnings are going up in a number of areas, many of which are right by Manitoba's border, but Estevan has managed to keep away from that.
The latest forecasts are showing an unseasonable cold running across the entirety of the prairies, with more northern and eastern areas, such as Yorkton and western Manitoba, seeing those warnings coming in.

Estevan Police address traffic concerns and locker theft
The Estevan Police Service responded to multiple incidents this week, including driving complaints and a theft at the Leisure Centre.
On Monday, the Estevan Police Service received a complaint about youth operating vehicles erratically and performing stunts in a local business parking lot. Members attended, monitored the lot, and spoke with several young drivers, but no concerning driving actions were observed.

SaskEnergy Tune-Up Assistance Program for furnaces still open
SaskEnergy’s Tune-Up Assistance Program (TAP) for furnaces is open for applications until January 3, 2025.
“TAP helps income-qualified homeowners maintain their natural gas furnaces for free,” explained Jodi Woollam, spokesperson with SaskEnergy.
Annual furnace maintenance and replacing filters is a good way to reduce carbon monoxide risks and keep warm air successfully flowing as the mercury falls.
BoC delivers jumbo interest rate cut, signals slower pace of cuts moving forward
The Bank of Canada lowered its key interest rate by half a percentage point today but signalled a slower pace of rate cuts moving forward.
The decision marked the fifth consecutive reduction since June and brings the central bank’s key rate down to 3.25 per cent.
Forecasters were widely expecting the jumbo interest rate cut after the November labour force survey showed the unemployment rate rose to 6.8 per cent.
Council releases 2025 fee changes bylaw for public comment
The city of Estevan is putting forward a new fee-charging bylaw which is introducing some changes to the area.
Many of those service fees are changing, with the bylaw requiring the changes be marked in red.

Carnduff mayor reflects on growth, plans for future
Carnduff Mayor Ross Apperley is looking ahead to another productive year for the southeast Saskatchewan community after a smooth municipal election.
“It was pretty seamless,” Apperley said. “We had two councillors that decided not to run, and we only had two councillors that stepped up to take the spot. We had no councillor election, and I went on unopposed.”
Apperley, who has served as mayor since 2009, reflected on key achievements over the past year, including a major infrastructure project that brought a new water treatment plant to the town.
