After eight weeks of candidates making their case to the voters, Estevan has made their choice and elected a new City Council yesterday. 

Anthony Sernick has won the city's top job in a close race against former councillor Rebecca Foord and first-time candidate Zacch Vandenhurk, raking in 1,254 votes. In the councillors race, two incumbents survived reelection and one former councillor earned his seat back. 

The Estevan Comprehensive School (ECS) Senior Boys’ Volleyball team made an impressive showing at regionals over the weekend in Moose Jaw, earning a spot in the upcoming provincials. The Elecs finished with a strong record of three wins and one loss.

“We lost our semi-final to Balgonie, but then rebounded and won the bronze medal,” said head coach Bryton Such.

Such noted that the match against Balgonie was one of the best the team has faced this season.

President-elect Donald Trump's promise to slap an across-the-board tariff of at least 10 per cent on all imports including from Canada is unlikely to apply to Canadian oil, energy experts are predicting.

The threat of the tariff is causing a lot of concern north of the border, where the Canadian Chamber of Commerce said such a tariff could take a $30-billion bite out of the Canadian economy.

A proposed class-action lawsuit against the Canadian government says Indigenous people removed from their communities and placed in group homes beginning in the 1950s suffered physical, sexual and psychological abuse that "was commonplace, condoned and, arguably, encouraged."

The Federal Court lawsuit filed this month in Vancouver says Indigenous children across the country were forcibly removed from their homes and taken "to live with strangers — sometimes hundreds of kilometres from their families and Indigenous communities."

8:56 pm: The numbers from the Church of God super poll have arrived, which concludes all of the polling places in Estevan. These are the unofficial results from the City of Estevan. 

Anthony Sernick has unofficially won the mayoral seat with 1,254 votes. Rebecca Foord was close behind with 1,108 votes. Zacch Vandenhurk sits third at 317 votes. 

Councillors

Canada's Public Health Agency has confirmed that a British Columbia teenager hospitalized last Friday is the country's first ever human case of domestically acquired avian flu.

The agency said in a statement Wednesday that testing at Canada's National Microbiology Laboratory in Winnipeg confirms the teen did contract the H5N1 avian flu, the same strain related to viruses found in B.C. flocks in an ongoing outbreak at poultry farms.

A busy Tuesday for the Estevan Police Service (EPS) as officers responded to various incidents, including a motor vehicle collision, property theft, and disturbances. They also handled an unusual call involving an injured pigeon and addressed complaints about youth trespassing and littering.

The first incident involved a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of King Street and Souris Avenue. The matter remains under investigation.

The southeast will see temperatures come down to below freezing next week as a system will come in to move the area into winter-like conditions.

That comes after a Colorado low is expected to dump snow over the weekend, though Environment Canada meteorologists suggest the cold snap will come too late to keep any of that around.

1937-2024

The family wishes to announce that Lorne Rutten, late of Carlyle, SK passed away at the Arcola Health Centre on Thursday, November 7, 2024 at the age of 86 years.

Cremation has taken place and a Private Graveside service will be held at a later date at Wordsworth Cemetery.

Harry Kamp
1952-2024

With great sorrow the family wishes to announce that Harry “Tiny” Kamp, late of Carlyle, SK passed away at the Moose Mountain Lodge, Carlyle, SK on Friday, November 8, 2024 at the age of 72 years.

Funeral Mass will be held at the Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady, Carlyle, SK on Friday, November 22, 204 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. Christopher Juchacz, o.f.s. V.F. presiding.  Interment will follow at St. Joseph’s R.C. Cemetery, Manor, SK.
