Supercell storm carves 400-kilometre path of destruction across Alberta and Saskatchewan

A violent long-track supercell storm tore across southern Alberta and west-central Saskatchewan on Wednesday, leaving a nearly 400-kilometre swath of damage in its wake and prompting critical alerts across the Prairies.

The storm first developed shortly before 3 p.m. near Nanton, Alta., before racing east-southeast at speeds topping 130 km/h. By 5:15 p.m., it had slammed into Brooks, where it toppled power lines, blew a building off a trailer at Highway 1 and 36, and shredded siding from homes and businesses.

Morse Museum to host free summer concert with Kolby Clunas

The Morse Museum is wrapping up its summer programming with an evening of live music and community fun.

On Thursday, August 28, 2025, the museum grounds at 410 McKenzie Street in Morse will welcome Kolby Clunas as part of her summer tour. The concert begins at 7:00 p.m., and admission is free. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

“We’re very excited to have Kolby Clunas stop at the museum as part of our summer events,” said a Morse Museum Board of Directors member, John Griffin. “It’s a concert for all ages, and we’re looking forward to a great turnout.”

Local RM firefighters reflect on experiences fighting northern fires

Three RM of Swift Current Fire Department firefighters have returned home after various tours up north fighting wildfires.

RM of Swift Current Fire Department Fire Chief Pete L'Heureux, firefighter Louis Cherpin, and firefighter Joni Hofer all spent time up north for the summer, lending aid to communities.

Local stock car drivers gear up for annual tour & all new event

The Prairie Dirt Racing Association is set to return to southwest Saskatchewan this weekend for a wild round of races in conjunction with the inaugural Cowboys & Chrome event. 

The Swift Current Motor Speedway will host the races with a full lineup, including the minis, hobbies, street stocks, modifieds, and a brand new kids modified class for ages eight to 14.

Local woman sentenced on theft & breach of probation

A southwest woman recently pleaded guilty to duo of charges stemming from two separate incidents in Swift Current. 

Natasha Braun appeared in Swift Current Provincial Court on Wednesday morning, where she pleaded guilty to and was sentenced on one count of theft under $5,000 as well as one count of breach of probation.

The resident of Swift Current was handed a global four-month suspended sentence, which included twenty hours of community service to be completed by November 28 this year and a standalone restitution order of $550.

A key meeting for Canada's canola industry takes place today in Saskatoon

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is meeting in Saskatoon today with Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald and Cody Blois, Parliamentary Secretary to the Prime Minister, along with representatives from the canola sector. The focus: responding to China’s steep tariffs on Canadian canola products.

Last week, China announced a 75.8% tariff on Canadian canola seed, adding to the 100% tariffs placed in March on canola meal and oil. 

Saskatchewan Premier Moe, federal minister to meet on China canola tariff

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe is set to meet today with federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald, along with industry groups, to discuss the steep Chinese tariff on Canadian canola seed. 

Kody Blois, the parliamentary secretary for Prime Minister Mark Carney, and Saskatchewan Agriculture Minister Daryl Harrison are also to attend the meeting in Saskatoon.

A press conference is scheduled following the discussion. 

Anand set to have meeting with Rubio in Washington amid bilateral tensions

Foreign Affairs Minister Anita Anand is set to have her first official meeting with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington today amid ongoing tensions in the bilateral relationship.

Anand and Rubio have previously spoken by phone, including in June ahead of the G7 Leaders' Summit in Kananaskis.

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc cycled through Washington in July looking for a tariff offramp but instead U.S. President Donald Trump boosted duties on Canada to 35 per cent.

Reimer and Tuplin lead Sask into 4x400-metre men's final

Swift Current track stars Rowan Reimer and Carter Tuplin helped Team Saskatchewan Wednesday night qualify for the 4x400-metre men's final at the Canada Summer Games.

Team Saskatchewan finished third in heat 1 with a time of 3:17.38, trailing only Ontario and Alberta. 

Reimer ran the third leg of the race, while Tuplin was the anchor, both helping qualify the province for a chance at a medal on Saturday night in St. John's, Newfoundland.

Update: Power outage stretching from Elrose to Kyle

Updated at 8 a.m. on Thursday

SaskPower says customers in Elrose and rural areas to the west have had power restored as of 3:14 a.m. on Thursday.

The Crown corporation says it's still working to repair power between Kyle and Elrose, with no current ETA.

Residents in Kyle and the surrounding area are currently without power.

SaskPower has dispatched crews to diagnose the outage and will work towards announcing a time frame for the repairs.
