High School sports this weekend

It's a busy weekend of high school sports.

In six-man football, Gull Lake hosts Central Butte at 4:00 pm.

You can hear the game on Magic 97 with Local Sports Live at 3:50 pm.

Shaunavon is on the road for their season debut in nine-man football, facing Foart Qu'Appelle.

The Swift Current Comp Colts play 5A football on the road against Moose Jaw Central tomorrow.

The Colts are 1-1 on the season so far.

Restaurant owner testifies he gave housing ‘out of kindness,’ not employment in trafficking trial

A Saskatchewan court on Thursday heard detailed testimony about the hiring, housing and immigration arrangements of the woman at the centre of an ongoing human trafficking trial. One of the two defendants, Haider, who owned the restaurant Empire Diner in Gull Lake and Bob's Diner in Elrose, took the stand

The complainant first applied online for a cook position in the Gull Lake restaurant in September 2022. The court was told she participated in two phone interviews with the restaurant’s operator, who later consulted with his business partners about her as a possible candidate.

Prairie Agriculture Ministers pleased with FPT discussion

As farmers work on the harvest, agriculture ministers from across Canada gathered in Winnipeg this week for the annual Federal-Provincial-Territorial (FPT) meeting. The annual event hosted by Manitoba Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn and Federal Agriculture Minister Heath MacDonald provided a key platform to discuss shared challenges, policy priorities, and the future of Canadian agriculture. 

Non-profit set to boost local care home with brand new fundraiser

A southwest non-profit is gearing up to gather the community to support equipment upgrades at the Meadows in Swift Current.

The Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation is set to hold the province's first Grand Parade fundraiser, coming up on September 20.

Crystal Imrie, communications and development coordinator for the Dr. Noble Irwin Regional Healthcare Foundation, shared that currently, they're only 11 per cent of the way to the $20,000 goal. 

Wheel n' Wednesdays put a bow on the 2025 car show season

Wheel n' Wednesday has officially wrapped up for 2025. 

The last of the Shaunavon-based car show dates took place this week, with 39 cars in attendance, with roughly 200 people joining the Excellerators Car Club at Ranch House Meats for a barbecue. 

David Horn, social media manager for the Excellerators Car Club, hasn't totalled the money yet, but says all the proceeds from the barbecue are going to support the Southwest Chronic Disease Support. 

"The barbecue was very well attended," said Horn. "It was all sponsored by Ranch House Meats."

Ashley Park residents trying to create new community gathering space

Folks in the Ashley Park area are striving towards renovating a green space into a community focal point.

The Ashley Park Community Corner Project is being led by locals living near the former Ashley Park School and park space. They are trying to raise funds to transform the corner lot located at the corner of Seventh Avenue Northeast and Connaught Drive. 

City crews tackling water main break in Swift Current

A water main break at 4th Avenue Northwest is slated for repair in Swift Current. 

City crews are aware of the issue and will be working to fix the break throughout the day.

Traffic in the vicinity of the watermain may be restricted, with the possibility of a road closure. 

Water services in the area may be affected.

Webb ready to welcome automotive crowd in second annual car show

The community out in Webb is gearing up for the second-ever Community Car Show. 

The car show is free to attend and free to enter. However, Whitney does ask that people preregister by contacting him at danewhtiney15@gmail.com

Organized by Dane Whitney and the Old Guys Card Club, the goal is to hopefully have as many cars in attendance as there were the first go around.

"We had such good success last year with attendants and people enjoying themselves, we decided to put it on again this year," said Whitney.
