Volunteers paint sidewalks to beautify Airdrie Legion

On Sunday, several Airdronians volunteered at the Royal Canadian Legion #288 in Airdrie, preparing it for Remembrance Day.

Volunteers took time to paint red insignias on the sidewalks outside of the Legion, Jason Hoffman, past president of the Legion, explained.

"These are artist-inspired creations, and it's to help raise awareness and beautify our branch."

He explained they have been painting the sidewalks with the insignia for a number of years.

"It's all about remembering our veterans and what they've done for our country."

Two Southern Alberta communities among Environmental Grant recipients

Two communities in Southern Alberta received the 2025 Community Naturalization and Tree Planting grant from Fortis Alberta.   

The Town of Stavely received funding for the Tree Growth Project, while the Town of Claresholm received funding for the Urban Forest Project.   

With grant funding of $2,500, the Town of Claresholm is working to increase the shade canopy and windbreak.  

Nomination deadline nears for Rocky View Schools trustee race

With the nomination deadline less than a week away, two candidates have submitted their intention to run for the two school trustee positions available in the Cochrane ward of Rocky View Schools (RVS).

Current RVS board chair Fiona Gilbert and Pamela Peters have filed their intentions to seek the two seats up for grabs in the Oct. 20 election. It will be the first time Cochrane has two representatives on the board.

Joanna Brownlee has filed her intention to run in Ward 4, which covers the rural area surrounding Cochrane, including Westbrook, Springbank, and Bragg Creek.

Airdronians raise $8,600 in Terry Fox Run

Sunday was the annual Terry Fox Run in Airdrie, and over 100 residents participated.

Kyla Cox, the organizer of the run, is thankful for all those who attended the annual event and helped raise funds for the Terry Fox Foundation.

"It was awesome. There were lots of new faces. We probably had 120-150 (residents) take part."

According to the TerryFox website, the annual Terry Fox Run has become a classic Canadian tradition. With nearly 600 communities, big and small, urban and rural, English and French, fundraising for cancer research.

Immigration lawyer, critics raise concerns about citizenship marker on Alberta ID

Critics are questioning what problem the Alberta government's move to add mandatory citizenship markers to provincial identification aims to solve, and say it opens the door to potential privacy breaches and discrimination.

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith said Monday the move is all about streamlining services and preventing election fraud. 

Rocky View County reminds: Don’t leave items on roadsides

Rocky View County took to social media to remind residents and visitors not to leave unwanted items on the side of county roads.

They shared that anything left on the side of county roads becomes their responsibility if left on public land.

"That means taxpayer dollars go toward cleanup instead of other vital services."

According to RVC, in a typical year, these costs hover around $300,000.

"Illegal dumping affects all of us, and the bill keeps growing."

First new training aircraft arrives at 15 Wing as FAcT program advances

The first two CT-102B Astra II training aircraft arrived at 15 Wing Moose Jaw yesterday, marking a significant milestone in the Royal Canadian Air Force's transition to the Future Aircrew Training (FAcT) program.

Discover Moose Jaw News was given a glimpse of the Astra IIs landing at the base for the first time, but the aircraft still have to undergo months of testing, certification, inspections, and crew training before they begin operations. 

Rocky View Schools shares letter regarding measles

Last week, Rocky View Schools (RVS) shared a letter with local families on behalf of Alberta's Interim Chief Medical Officer about measles.

The letter from Dr. Sunil Sookram states that as measles continues to spread in some areas and communities in Alberta, across Canada and globally, the province's collective efforts are making a difference with the support of parents and communities. 

Southwest man behind bars after sexual offence against minor

A southwest man has begun a substantial jail sentence after his sentencing this past summer on charges of sexual interference and provoking fear in a justice system participant. 

Julian Lavallee pleaded guilty and was sentenced by Judge O'Hanlon on the pair of charges in Swift Current Provincial Court on June 4.

The 39-year-old received a three-year jail sentence on one count and a 60-day sentence to be served consecutively on the second count.

Buffalo Pound Provincial Park sees increase in visitor and campers this summer

It was a busy summer season for Buffalo Pound Provincial Park, with an increase in visitors and campers compared to last year. 

The park issued more than 14,000 entry permits this season, up 0.27 per cent. More than 5,000 campsites were booked, an increase of five per cent from last year. 

Fall camping is now in full swing, and there is still time to plan a last-minute trip to Buffalo Pound.
