Auto insurance rate hike and new 'care first' model: What drivers need to know

Albertans may see some changes to their auto insurance in January 2025, with a major overhaul of the system anticipated by January 2027.

The first changes will involve adjustments to the rate cap for good drivers, set to take effect in January 2025. Premiums for responsible drivers will see an estimated increase to 7.5 per cent, intended to account for rising legal, repair, and disaster-related costs while protecting against more substantial hikes.

Airdrie preparing for weekend winter walloping

Airdrie and the surrounding areas are under a snowfall warning as southern Alberta prepares for a significant winter storm.

According to Environment Canada, snow will begin early Friday morning and spread northward, bringing a long period of heavy snowfall.

The area could see 5 to 10 cm of snow by Saturday morning, with heavier snow arriving early Saturday. Another 10 to 15 centimetres is expected by Saturday evening, totalling 15 to 25 centimetres by the time the storm eases overnight into Sunday.

Laura Lawrence brings Cyber Safety and Online Harms talk to Humboldt

An important, frank and startling presentation on cyber safety and the perils of too much online time for kids is coming to Humboldt.  

Laura Lawrence, speaker dedicated to youth mental health and wellness, returns to the area to spread information about Online Harms and Cyber Safety. The presentation is free for the community on December 3, 6:30 pm at Jubilee Hall in the Humboldt Uniplex.  

Winnipeg police find no evidence of armed man on U of M campus

The Winnipeg Police Service has been unable to find any evidence that a dangerous person was on campus at the University of Manitoba earlier this week.

On Tuesday, Winnipeg police flooded the U of M's Fort Garry campus after receiving reports of a man allegedly armed with a large kitchen knife near the Allen building. 

The Winnipeg Police Service used social media and the province's Alert Ready Emergency Alert System to get the word out and to ask people to avoid the area. 

Manitoba premier and Winnipeg mayor go face-to-face in friendly hockey game

Premier Wab Kinew and Mayor Scott Gillingham will go head to head later this month in a friendly hockey game. 

It's all part of the Winnipeg 150 City vs. Province Hockey Game at Gateway Recreation Centre, which will see the mayor, city councillors and members of Winnipeg's Public Service face off against the Premier, MLAs and provincial staff.

Airdrie Fire Department sends message about ice safety in Airdrie

With the colder temperatures moving into Airdrie and ice starting to develop on bodies of water, the Airdrie Fire Department is reminding residents about ice safety.

Airdrie Fire Chief Mike Pirie explained AFD has one main message they share every year.

"Ice is very unpredictable. It's not just something you can look at and know if it is safe or not. Airdrie has a lot of water features, we have ponds, we have Nose Creek Park, we have canals, and none of those are safe to be out on during the winter time."

Get the snowblower ready as Environment Canada is calling for 15-25 cm of snow this weekend

Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning this morning as we're expecting a big dump of the white stuff this weekend.

You can expect 2-4 cm today, 5-10 cm tonight and another 10-15 cm tomorrow with the snow expected to taper off Sunday.

Temperatures are expected to be somewhat mild with highs of -11 today and Saturday but you might want to plug in your vehicle as overnight lows are expected to hit -19.

Okotoks' 2025 budget sees a tax increase and a utility rate decrease

The Town of Okotoks' 2025 budget will include an increase in property taxes, as well as a decrease in utility rates.

Town Council approved the amendments to next year's budget, which includes an Operating Budget of $80.386 million, at their November 19 meeting.

The average Okotoks homeowner (with an assessed home value of $663,000) will see an increase of $1.99 a month, which is an additional $23.88 a year.

While inflationary costs did lead to a tax hike, the 4.8 per cent increase is lower than anticipated.

Major snowfall to hit Alberta starting Friday morning

Environment & Climate Change Canada has issued a snowfall warning for Central Alberta with a long period of snowfall expected with total amounts of up to 35 cm depending on your region.

Snowfall will begin in southern Alberta Friday morning, spreading northward through the day.
