Gurney adjourned as local case unfolds

A southwest man had matters in court this week for charges stemming from a series of incidents in June, which included a stolen truck, a break and enter, and a police chase that caused a grass fire.

Nekaneet First Nation's Donny Gurney was represented by legal aid in Swift Current Provincial Court on Wednesday morning. 

His application for legal aid was only recently accepted, and the defence hasn't begun to dig into the disclosure yet.

The 28-year-old faces several charges;

Municipal by-election being held Wednesday in Eatonia for council spot

If they didn't already last Thursday during advanced polls, Eatonia residents will cast their vote today for the municipal by-election relating to an open council spot.

Two candidates are up for the council seat, Curtis Becker and Chris Hiebert.

The council seat was filled during last November's regular election, but was left vacant shortly after, with the Town of Eatonia making multiple attempts at running a by-election since before April.

SHA warning about heat stroke for Swift Current

Southwest Saskatchewan residents are being warned to take care in the extreme heat. 

Symptoms like nausea, dizziness, fatigue, and vomiting are signs that someone is suffering from overheating. In the case that these symptoms present, it's key to take shelter out of the sun, to drink lots of water to help hydrate the body, and to cool down an individual's core temperature. 

Dr. David Torr, medical health officer for Southwest Saskatchewan, describes heat sickness as the lesser version before full-blown heat stroke. 

The Airdrie area just had its hottest July 8 in 138 years

Tuesday’s high of 31.8 C in the Airdrie-Calgary area broke a daily temperature record set in 1886, according to Environment Canada.

“That includes the Calgary and Airdrie area,” said Heather Rombough, Senior Meteorologist with Environment Canada. 

According to the July 9 summary, the previous record of 31.7 C was set in 1886. Records for the area have been kept since 1881.

Baseball meets books: Gulls host story time at local library

The Sylvan Lake Gulls return for story time at local library.

The Sylvan Lake Gulls are ready to tell a few stories and hit a home run for literacy.

The team returns for another year of Gulls Story Time at the Sylvan Lake Municipal Library on Thursday, July 10, from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.

The event features baseball-themed story readings, a Q&A with players and coaches, photo opportunities, and a visit from Sully the Gully.

68 wildfires remain active according to SPSA

As of 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, July 8, the Saskatchewan Public Safety Agency (SPSA) has reported 68 active wildfires across the province. The agency’s latest update categorizes seven fires as contained, 15 as not contained, 30 as undergoing assessment, and 16 as involving protection of critical values such as communities, infrastructure, or resources. 

RCMP warn: Lock up before you head out

With summer in full swing and more Albertans heading outdoors, the RCMP is reminding residents to take steps to prevent theft of, and from, vehicles during seasonal activities.

Whether you’re parked at a trailhead, campsite, or lakeside lot, police say simple actions can make a big difference.

That includes locking your vehicle at all times, even if you’re nearby, and never leaving it running while unattended, not even for a quick errand. Thieves can strike in seconds.
