Weekend of colour and fun at MacGregor signals farewell to summer

With fall right around the corner, MacGregor and the Heartland Recreation Commission gave residents another reason to appreciate the warm weather.

The weekend kicked off with their annual Fall Fest on September 14. Karla Gurke, recreation director and facility manager of the Heartland Recreation Commission, says attendance was low to start, but that quickly changed.

With a newly-upgraded runway at Moosomin Airport the local community can look forward to better healthcare access along with other benefits.

Making the announcement that the project was completed was Minister of Highways Lori Carr who called the new upgrade a great boon for the region.

Airdrie Terry Fox Run sees new faces, exceeds expectations

Airdrie's Terry Fox Run saw an increase in participants this year compared to 2023.

On Sunday, around 130 Airdronians gathered at East Lake Park to participate in the annual Terry Fox Run. This year $7515 was raised, the goal was $6100.

All money fundraised this year went towards the Terry Fox Foundation. The Foundation works with people from around the world to support and fundraise for research to end cancer.

Ste. Anne Jr. Aces excited to join the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League

The Ste. Anne Jr. Aces are one of three brand new teams in the Hanover Tache Junior Hockey League (HTJHL) 

Ste. Anne Aces were officially added to the league, along with the Grunthal Red Wings and Mitchell Mustangs, at the (HTJHL) meeting last week. 

Miranda Lanouette is the general manager for the Ste. Anne Jr. Aces. 

Steinbach Animal Rescue asks for help after flooding causes damage to new building

Many people in Steinbach experienced water damage to their yards and homes yesterday and Steinbach and Area Animal Rescue (SAAR) was hit hard.  

Vice President of SAAR, Graham Pollock says water came from the creek behind the building and flooded in through the windows, destroying the basement of the brand-new building. 

Sunrise Credit Union Branches Raise Close to $28K for Local Groups through Summer Events

Since early spring, Sunrise Credit Union staff in each of their 19 branches held a total of 26 events, this in partnership with their local community groups, raising a total of $27,893.89 for local projects.

President and CEO, Tim Klassen, says the money raised from these events is a testament to the unity and involvement of their communities and the value they place on their community support.

On July 24th, 2024, a 13-year-old female reported being sexually assaulted on July 22nd, 2024, at an unknown location after the 30-year-old male suspect allegedly gave alcohol to her and her friend. The investigation led to the arrest of the 30-year-old male. He was released on an Undertaking with a court date of November 25th, 2024.

Conserved land expands nearly tenfold near Consul

A chunk of southwest conservation land has recently expanded by more than 1,000 hectares.

Nestled deep into the southwest corner of the province, Zen-Ridge was initially 195 hectares of grasslands, rolling hills, seasonal creeks and streams, and home to several at-risk species. 

The Nature Conservancy of Canada's program director for the southwest, Michael Burak, is thrilled with their recent purchase which now totals 1,235 hectares of protected flora and fauna near Consul.

More details on Alberta’s $8.6 billion School Construction Accelerator Program

Provincial officials have offered more details following Premier Danielle Smith's announcement on Tuesday evening regarding the School Construction Accelerator Program. 

According to the province, starting in Budget 2025, up to 30 new schools and eight modernizations or replacements will be launched annually for the next three years. Additionally, modular classrooms will add 20,000 new student spaces over four years. The program will also expedite previously approved projects, with 10 priority schools moving to the next stage of construction immediately.
