Backyard Friends Community Supper returns Wednesday night in Lacombe

After taking the summer off, the Backyard Friends Community Supper returns tonight in Lacombe at the LMC.

Doors open at 5 p.m. with a game of bingo. Supper gets underway at 5:30 p.m.

The free Community Supper will take place on the third Wednesday of every month during September, October, and November. The meal will take a break during December but is expected to return in January.

Lacombe FCSS Community Projects Coordinator Wendy Griffin says the event wouldn't be possible without the support of the community.

E-bike thefts still the minority in Swift Current

As e-bike ownership continues to soar, the Swift Current City RCMP haven't noticed a spike in thefts of the trendy transport.

Over the last three months, the detachment has only received 13 reports of bike thefts in Swift Current, five of which were e-bikes.

Evan Gordon, Staff Sgt. with the Swift Current City RCMP, said they haven't dealt with an influx of reports for bike thefts in 2024.

Investigation leads to $300,000 worth of stolen property in Winnipeg compound

A 38-year-old man is in custody and several other arrests are expected in connection to a recent investigation that led the Winnipeg Police Service to discover around $300,000 worth of stolen property.

On Sept. 7, members of the Central District Community Support Unit were conducting proactive patrolling in the 200 block of Tecumseh Street, when they observed a pickup truck parked in an enclosed compound.

A request for a search warrant for the compound unit was requested and issued. 

R.M. of Stanley continues to grapple with significant flooding brought on by Monday's heavy rainfall

"Our infrastructure is facing a challenge of an unprecedented scale." That from Ike Friesen, Reeve for the R.M. of Stanley, in the most recent update provided by the Municipality following Monday's deluge of rain. 

According to the Municipality, 7 to 8 inches fell in some areas within 24 hours, and officials say this record-breaking deluge has exposed the limitations of the area’s current drainage infrastructure. The existing infrastructure, including culverts, ditches, and other stormwater management systems, are being tested to their limit and in some cases, beyond.

Grande Prairie RCMP to Cram a Cruiser for local Salvation Army

Instead of filling the backseats with suspects, The Grande Prairie RCMP will be cramming their cruisers with donations of non-perishable food items and essentials in support of the Grande Prairie Salvation Army.

Detachment officers and staff will be present Saturday and Sunday September 21/22 at the Save-On-Foods (10819 106 Avenue, Grande Prairie) from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Town sirens being tested today

The Town of High River's two emergency sirens are undergoing maintenance today.

According to the Town's website, a short burst from the siren may be heard as a silent system test is conducted. 

If it was a real emergency, you would hear the siren repeat continuously.

Rocky View County exploring possibility of a Balzac Chamber

Rocky View County (RVC) is looking into establishing a Chamber of Commerce in the Balzac area.

At the latest RVC council meeting, the council voted to receive the "Requirements to Establish a Chamber of Commerce in the Balzac Area" report for information.

They have now instructed the administration to collaborate with businesses interested in establishing a chamber of commerce in Balzac and offer support in the following areas, according to RVC:

Union local representing support staff calls for more funding and supports following attack

A local union is calling for increased funding and supports in schools following a shocking attack on a girl at Saskatoon’s Evan Hardy Collegiate earlier in September.  

Members of CUPE 8443, some of which are employed at Evan Hardy, say additional funds are needed to put into place measures to stem increasing levels of violence in schools.
