Estevan Brain Boogie brings survivors and supporters together

The Saskatchewan Brain Injury Association’s annual Brain Boogie made its return to Estevan this weekend, bringing together survivors, families, and community members for a day of walking, fundraising, and connection.

Despite rainy weather, the event went ahead on Saturday morning. Organizers adjusted the schedule to take advantage of a break in the rain, ensuring participants could complete the walk before heavier showers set in.

Rocky View Schools updates families on teachers’ strike action

The Alberta Teachers’ Association has served formal notice of strike action, confirming a province-wide walkout will begin Oct. 6 at 12:01 a.m. if no deal is reached.

Rocky View Schools said in a Sept. 12 update the notice covers a general strike. “A general strike means that teachers and school administrators are required to stop all services and leave RVS facilities. Schools will be closed for all students,” the division said.

Hundreds in Cochrane remember Charlie Kirk in candlelight vigil

Cochrane was among the Alberta communities holding candlelight vigils for American conservative activist Charlie Kirk, whose life was cut short in a shooting.

Last night, hundreds gathered at the stage of the Cochrane Ranche historic site, holding candles and coming together in a moment of reflection and solidarity. Attendees prayed for his family, and some shared memories and thoughts as they stood together in love to mourn the loss of a life that had touched many.

North Perimeter lanes reopen after serious collision Monday morning

Traffic is flowing once again along the North Perimeter Highway, after a serious collision on Monday morning saw the westbound lanes shut down for several hours.

The incident happened sometime around 8 a.m., between Pipeline Road and McPhillips Street. 

Emergency crews had closed the westbound lanes for several hours while personnel responded and police investigated the incident.

Around 200 people ran, walked, or rolled in the Terry Fox Run in Okotoks on Sunday, Sept. 14.

Participants enjoyed sunny skies and warm conditions as they set off on 1.5, 5, and 10k routes.

As in previous years, the run began at Sheep River Park, where Fountain Tire Okotoks hosted a barbecue with hot dogs for participants.

By the start of the run, more than $15,000 had been raised, with the total expected to grow in the coming days.

Gallery: Rubber duck race and carnival returns to Okotoks for third year

Over 1,500 rubber ducks raced down the Sheep River on Saturday, Sept. 13.

It was the Simpora Foundation's third annual Rubber Duck Race & Family Fun Carnival.

Locals adopted ducks to compete in the race, which started at the Sheep River Bridge and finished at the Laurie Boyd Bridge.

Cash prizes were awarded for the first, second, third, and last-place ducks.

Vehicle crashes into IHOP: Calgary police

A car drove through an International House of Pancakes (IHOP) in northeast Calgary, according to the city's police.

The crash was at the IHOP on 64 Avenue, with fire crews receiving a report of a vehicle driving into the restaurant at around 11:15 a.m.

According to EMS, all injuries were minor and no patients were transported to hospital.

Calgary police continue to investigate the cause of the crash. 

 

Student mental health sessions surge, writing targets missed in Rocky View Schools report

Rocky View Schools reported 5,701 presentations and work from Education Centre staff on student mental health last year, compared with a target of 200. Early reading scores also improved, but writing results remained below the 80 per cent target, the division said in its latest strategic plan update.

The surge in mental health programming was made possible when the Alberta government extended its Mental Health Grant, allowing supports to continue for both students and staff. By comparison, 747 sessions were reported in 2023/24 and 1,207 in 2022/23.

The fog is creating near-zero visibility and motorists are encouraged to travel with caution as conditions will be hazardous.

If you are traveling, prepare for near-zero visibility. If visibility is reduced while driving, turn on your lights, maintain a safe following distance, slow down, watch for tail lights in front of you, and be prepared to stop.
