Strike or lockout notice could take place for Sobeys Rocky View distribution centre employees
Unionized employees at Sobeys’ Rocky View Distribution Centre near Balzac could serve a 72-hour strike or lockout notice as early as Monday, Sept. 15, as they push for higher wages and changes in workplace conditions, Teamsters Local 987 said in a Sept. 9 release.
The union said 251 employees at the facility — formally [sic] the Sobeys Capital Inc. Rocky View Retail Support Centre — cast ballots Sept. 9 on possible strike action, seeking “more competitive wages along with the resolution of non-monetary grievances in the workplace.”
Unity RCMP report charges in firearm case, investigate theft and threats
Unity RCMP charged a 42-year-old man with firearm offences after responding to a report of an unwanted individual in a public area last week.
The man, who has no fixed address, faces counts of unauthorized possession of a firearm and unsafe storage of a firearm.
Saskatchewan celebrates music education with province-wide initiative
Saskatchewan will officially mark Music Education Day on Monday, September 15, with an event at the Wascana Bandstand in Regina.
The gathering, which begins at noon, will bring together music educators, students, parents, and provincial leaders to celebrate the role of music in schools and communities. The Honourable Everett Hindley, Minister of Education, will formally proclaim Saskatchewan Music Education Day, alongside representatives from the Saskatchewan Teachers’ Federation and SaskCulture Inc.
Claresholm council moving forward with Arena Solar Project, with potential debenture
Claresholm Town Council is making progress on the Arena Solar Project, with a possible debenture of $310,000 to fund the project’s remaining balance.
In April, council awarded the Arena Solar Project to D-Com Energy Solutions.
“They've been doing some structural design elements and working on getting engineers' approvals for the actual install,” said Abe Tinney, Town of Claresholm Chief Administrative Officer (CAO).
Carstairs and Didsbury students earn free Chromebooks
Several students in nearby communities, including Carstairs and Didsbury, recently earned free Chromebooks.
According to Chinook's Edge School Division, 168 Chinook’s Edge students earned themselves a Chromebook over the summer.
"The students participated in the Jumpstart program. Jumpstart provides a foundation in the Google operating environment and is geared to high school students."
The school division shared that students who earn at least six credits in the program receive a Chromebook.
Construction on new water and sewer mains coming to Wilkie
A major infrastructure project will soon get underway in Wilkie, with construction of new water and sewer mains along 1st Avenue scheduled to begin next week.
The work will take place between Main Street and 2nd Street, an area that currently has no underground mains. Town administrator Rebecca Parent said the project will give the town more flexibility for future development.

CTR schools urge parents to prepare for possible teacher strike
Christ the Redeemer Catholic Schools says parents may want to prepare for childcare in case teachers walk off the job on Oct. 6.
On Friday, Sept. 12, the Alberta Teachers’ Association (ATA) filed legal strike notice with the Alberta Labour Relations Board.
CTR issued a statement saying schools continue as normal for now, but the division is warning families to be ready in case a strike goes ahead, including arranging for childcare.
Second Annual Webb Community Car Show gets a crowd of car connoisseurs
The Second Annual Webb Community Car Show saw a total of 85 cars come out on Saturday.
While that is a few down from last year, the turnout still saw a show with 275 people coming out for the cars, the lunch, and everything else taking place. Some came to socialize, and others came to win prizes.
Dane Whitney helped to organize this event with the rest of the Old Guys Card Club, rounding up the volunteers who helped make this event possible.
Apartment and combine fires keep Rosetown RCMP busy
Rosetown RCMP responded to multiple incidents last week, including fires, mischief complaints, and traffic concerns, according to a media release.
On September 9, members attended an apartment complex fire in Rosetown and later responded to a combine fire in the RM of Monet. A motor vehicle rollover near Harris resulted in minor injuries, but the driver was cleared by EMS.
