Lacombe students recognized at Alberta Science and Technology Awards Gala
On Nov. 1, 2024, students from École Secondaire Lacombe Composite High School were recognized at the 35th annual Alberta Science and Technology (ASTech) Awards Gala in Edmonton.
Stijn Tans, Wakefield Roadhouse, Judah Boyko, and Eugene Malabuyoc were celebrated for their innovative BeeWise hive monitoring system, developed to promote sustainable beekeeping practices.
The BeeWise project was made possible through MindFuel’s Tech Futures Challenge, which encourages students to address real-world environmental issues through science and technology.
Local art exhibit to support families in need
A Red Deer Polytechnic (RDP) Visual Arts Student’s new art display is highlighting the influence art can have on social issues.
“Unhampered” is a print exchange and food drive tomorrow (Nov. 7) at RDP in “The Forum” between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.
Artist Bailey Horton was inspired to create a new way for community members to support the food bank, even if they are unable to donate.
Red Deer building permit values rise in October
Building permit values increased in October, with 133 issued permits valued at $12.4 million, compared with 71 issued permits in October 2023 worth $2.8 million.
Year-to-date values remain higher in 2024, with current values at $105 million, compared with $76.6 million at this time last year.

Alberta could add two electoral divisions—Could Airdrie be affected?
The Alberta government introduced Bill 31, the Justice Statutes Amendment Act, 2024, which proposes to increase the number of electoral divisions in Alberta from 87 to 89; however, it is currently unclear which divisions would be impacted by this.
Foggy start to Wednesday across Southeast Manitoba
Environment Canada issued a fog advisory overnight, continuing this morning across southeastern Manitoba, including Steinbach, RM of Hanover, RM of Piney, RM of Ste. Anne and the city of Winnipeg.
Motorists are expected to experience near-zero visibility.
They advise that those traveling be prepared for areas of reduced visibility, slow down, watch for tail lights ahead, and be prepared to stop.
Rocky Mountain House RCMP assist Drayton Valley officers in arresting fleeing suspect
A 24-year-old man faces several charges following an incident that occurred Nov. 2, 2024.
Drayton Valley RCMP assisted by officers from Rocky Mountain House Detachment, entered into an investigation of a flight from police after an attempted traffic stop for dangerous driving on Highway 620 in Brazeau County.
The vehicle involved, was later discovered to have been stolen and had been reported by witnesses as tailgating and driving at excess of speeds of 150 km/hr.
All highways reopen after several multi-vehicle crashes on bridges on foggy morning
All highways in the Winnipeg region are now reopened after thick fog and slippery road conditions led to a treacherous Wednesday morning commute.
Many of the collisions occurred on bridges or overpasses where cooler air below these structures causes slick surfaces, especially when conditions are around the freezing mark and damp.
Serial burglar arrested following 17 Tim Hortons break-ins
RCMP have arrested a suspect following numerous break-and-enters at Tim Hortons across Alberta and Saskatchewan, including a location in Rocky View County.
The RCMP Southern Alberta District Crime Reduction Unit (SAD CRU), in collaboration with the RCMP Regina General Investigation Section, has arrested Joshua Elliot Moose, a 25-year-old from Medicine Hat following a five-month investigation.
The investigation revealed that Moose was allegedly involved in break-ins at 12 Tim Hortons locations in Alberta and five in Saskatchewan between June and October 2024.
