Poilievre's byelection win sets the table for his return to Parliament this fall
After a summer of rodeos, dinosaurs and door-knocking, Pierre Poilievre is now officially heading back to Ottawa as a Conservative member of Parliament for Alberta.
The Tory leader will represent the sprawling rural riding of Battle River—Crowfoot, in the province's eastern region, after winning a byelection on Monday.
"Getting to know the people in this region has been the privilege of my life," Poilievre told a crowd at a victory party in Camrose, Alta., on Monday night. "In fact, I've had a hell of a lot of fun."
Flight attendants union says tentative deal reached to end Air Canada strike
Air Canada and the union representing its flight attendants have reached a tentative deal to end a strike that began on Saturday morning.
The airline said it will gradually begin operations Tuesday.
The two sides met through the night with a federal mediator before reaching a tentative agreement that will be brought to members of the Air Canada component of the Canadian Union of Public Employees.
"Your right to vote on your wages was preserved," the union said in a post on its website announcement the end of the strike.
One dead after crash on Highway 1
One person is dead after a car crash on Highway 1.
According to Strathmore RCMP, the crash was on Monday (Aug. 18) at the intersection of Highway 1 and Wheatland Trail between a semi truck and an SUV.
"As a result of the collision, the semi caught on fire," wrote Strathmore RCMP. "A passenger was able to exit the semi; however, the driver was trapped."
The driver died at the scene and was identified as a 24-year-old from Brampton, Ont.

Alberta planning to power some of its jails with solar energy
Alberta's government is looking to power some of its jails with solar energy.
The province says it's planning to build solar installations at five of its 10 correctional facilities, with early energy cost savings estimated at $1 million per year.
"The solar installations are expected to offset approximately 80 per cent of the energy used at each site," Michael Kwas, press secretary for Infrastructure Minister Martin Long, said in an email.
He said the estimated savings will likely change as the installations are further designed.
Highway 1 closed due to semi crash
Both sides of Highway 1 in Strathmore are closed due to a car crash.
The crash was on Monday (Aug. 18) afternoon at the intersection of Highway 1 and Wheatland Trail.
Firefighters, RCMP, and paramedics were on the scene, with the crash involving several vehicles, including a semi truck.
CCA President optimistic they can reach a deal with Alberta Beef Producers
The President of the Canadian Cattle Association (CCA) says he's optimistic that they can reach an agreement that will see the Alberta Beef Producers (ABP) remain part of the national organization.
Last week, ABP gave the CCA notice to withdraw from the national organization as of July 1, 2026, citing among its concerns the organization's funding model, board structure, and representation since Alberta producers contribute over 50 percent to the organization.

Chestermere continues upgrades to recreation spaces
The City of Chestermere is moving ahead with improvements to local recreation spaces.
As part of council's plan, construction crews will be paving the Sunset Beach parking lot from Monday (Aug. 18) to Friday (Aug. 22).
The project is intended to enhance accessibility, safety, and comfort for residents visiting the lake.
During construction, temporary parking will be available along East Chestermere Drive. Residents will still be able to access their mailboxes.
Alberta farmers review pest control methods for gophers
Richardson's Ground Squirrels are having an increasing impact on Alberta farms, prompting new efforts to assess the situation.
Wheatland County announced that the 2025 Agriculture Service Boards (ASB) Gopher Impact Survey will be available for farmers and producers to complete starting on Monday (Aug. 18).
The survey aims to assess the extent of crop and land damage caused by gophers and evaluate the effectiveness of current pest control methods. The results may help create a call to action on future decisions around gopher management on prairie farms.
