A jack-knifed semi-trailer that was blocking the northbound QEII just south of the Highway 581 junction, southeast of Carstairs, has been cleared. 

The incident was reported shortly after 7:00 a.m., according to 511 Alberta. Southbound traffic had already been affected earlier in the morning when a semi spun out near Township Road 310, northeast of Carstairs. That crash was cleared by 6:54 a.m., but one lane was closed while emergency crews responded.

Highway conditions in and around Airdrie remained treacherous on Wednesday morning, with snow, ice, and zero visibility reported across multiple routes. 

According to 511 Alberta, Highway 2 is partly covered in snow south toward Calgary and north past the Highway 2A junction, with shoulder ice, icy sections, slush, and limited visibility reported.

A snowfall warning issued earlier Tuesday by Environment Canada has since been lifted. 

The warning, was in effect for Rocky View County near Airdrie and Crossfield, called for 5 to 10 centimetres of snow overnight, with some areas possibly seeing up to 15 centimetres. Snow is expected to end by Wednesday morning.

"Rapidly accumulating snow could make travel difficult over some locations," the agency said. "Visibility may be suddenly reduced at times in heavy snow."

RCMP officers across Alberta responded to 147 motor vehicle collisions on Thursday as late-season snow created hazardous driving conditions. Despite the high volume of incidents, police confirmed there were no fatalities.

"RCMP officers in many parts of the province were kept busy yesterday responding to motor vehicle collision," RCMP said in a statement, urging drivers to remain vigilant and take steps to ensure their safety and the safety of others. "Although we are at the tail end of winter, snowstorms are still common."

Hazardous Weather Expected Across the Region

Airdrie roads and the QEII remain clear this morning, but Environment Canada is predicting the possibility of freezing drizzle and snow moving in. Flurries are likely today, with a 60 per cent chance of precipitation and a risk of freezing drizzle this morning. Winds will stay light at 15 km/h, with temperatures holding at -3°C and a wind chill near -8.

A previous collision causing heavy delays near Yankee Valley Boulevard toward Main Street has been cleared.

Drivers are reminded to slow down and adjust to weather and road conditions, which are expected to deteriorate into the afternoon and overnight.

Snowfall, gusty winds up to 40 km/h, reduced visibility, and temperatures dropping below freezing (–2 C today, –9 C overnight Friday), with wind chills nearing –10 C, are forecast.

A temporary lane closure will take place on Main Street north of Ridgegate Way today to raise two streetlights.

Emergency crews responded to a crash on the southbound QEII Highway near the weigh station early Thursday morning. The incident caused significant traffic delays in both directions, with a fire truck blocking the northbound left lane.

The scene has since been cleared, and traffic is moving normally again. No details on the number of vehicles involved or injuries were confirmed.

Motorists were advised to avoid the area and take alternate routes during the incident.
