Federal government plans to give $250 cheques to millions of Canadians, cut GST

The Liberal government plans to temporarily lift the federal sales tax off a slew of items just in time for Christmas and send cheques to millions of Canadians this spring, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced on Thursday.

"Our government can't set prices at the checkout, but we can put more money in people's pockets," Trudeau said at a press conference in Toronto alongside Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland. 

Trudeau expected to announce temporary GST break on some items, NDP says

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is expected to announce on Thursday a temporary GST break for certain essential items to help ease affordability pressures.

NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh says in a statement that the announcement is in response to his party's demands to permanently lift the goods and services tax on a range of expenses.

New traffic lights illuminate 16th Street and First Avenue

The new lights installed on 16th Street are up and running and City of Weyburn Director of Engineering, Renee Cugnet, says it will increase the level of service for highway traffic.  

“The intersection of 16th Street and 1st Avenue has been upgraded to a traffic signal light now, and the four-way stop signs have been removed, so it is no longer a four-way stop. So be aware, if you're coming through that intersection, to watch for a green or red light.” 

'Thrilling' fundraising record set at the Weyburn Public Library's fall sale

The Weyburn Public Library has set a fundraising record at the Fall Book Sale and Silent Auction of donated Art and Christmas items.

The books and other media materials alone brought in $4,536.65.

"The art auction was listed at $1,250, but people have been rounding up, so we're actually closer to $1,300 for the auction right now," Branch Manager Dawn Silver said, noting that if someone's item came in at $40, when they pick it up they're giving $50. "The donations we got were extraordinarily good this year."

Parole board 'working' to have Bernardo victims' families attend hearing in-person

The Parole Board of Canada says it is now working to allow victims’ families to attend Paul Bernardo's parole hearing and deliver their victim impact statements in person.

A lawyer representing the families of two teenage girls murdered by notorious killer and serial rapist Paul Bernardo said they had been denied the right to deliver their statements in person at Bernardo's upcoming parole hearing. The issue was raised by Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre during question period in the House of Commons Wednesday.

There is just one more week until the conclusion of the 27th annual Festival of Trees. 

Assistant Executive Director with the Family Place, Judy Lumb, said everything can be viewed at the Great Plains Ford Auction House on First Avenue south.

This includes the 26 trees, which will be auctioned off live on November 26th at the first in-person gala event in five years.

"It is a ticketed event, we do still have some individual tickets, so if anybody needs them, they can call us at the Family Place."

South Asian dance workshop coming to Weyburn Public Library

This weekend the Weyburn Public Library is hosting a South Asian Dance Workshop presented by the Mudra Traditional Arts Academy and led by world renowned dance practitioner Vrunda Upadhyay. 

According to information sent from the Mudra Traditional Arts Academy, Upadhyay is internationally acclaimed, and a celebrated Bharatanatyam expert. With over 20 years of experience, she will lead a workshop looking into the beauty of South Asian dance traditions, cultural storytelling, and the nuance of classical expressions with a focus on Bharatanatyam techniques.
