Fort McMurray rallies to top Beavers at Tom Laing Park
The Weyburn Beavers dropped a close one Thursday night at Tom Laing Park, falling 8–6 to the Fort McMurray Giants. Despite an early lead and a strong start from pitcher Owen McConnell, the Giants rallied back to get their first win of the season.
Citizens report results in impaired driving arrest
A complaint from a concerned citizen led to an impaired driving arrest.
Deputy Chief Shane St. John with the Weyburn Police Service uses the incident to shed light on the importance of Report Impaired Driving (RID) complaints, thanking the person who reported the driver.
"We're thanking the public for a written complaint calling in suspicious driver, and they were dead on - this person was impaired by alcohol."
St. John explains sometimes these calls turn up drivers that are only distracted or otherwise not impaired, however, they are still significant.
Burrowing owls pop back up in farmers' fields following winter retreat
With plants sprouting from the ground and farmers confidently finished with seeding, tractors in the field might find some new friends popping up in their farmland this summer. Burrowing owls can be found in the Saskatchewan prairies during the summer, having returned from their trip down south over the winter.
They're now moving into their namesake burrows in prairie meadows, grasslands, and even farmers' fields.

New federal bill aims to improve labour mobility, eliminate internal trade barriers
The Liberal government has introduced legislation aimed at cutting down barriers to internal trade by recognizing provincial and territorial rules at the federal level.
Officials who briefed reporters this morning say the goal is to reduce the number of redundant standards across the country.
They say that, for example, a company that produces washing machines that meet a provincial energy efficiency standard won't have to meet a separate federal standard to sell outside that province.
Years after it was pitched, Canada is still waiting for a national disaster agency
In 2023, as Canada suffered through its worst-ever wildfire season, the federal government was looking at creating a national disaster response agency.
Two years later, the country is again facing another summer of wildfires. There is still no sign of such an agency, though governments are tapping the private sector to help with evacuations.
Ali Asgary, a York University professor of disaster and emergency management, said the work to establish a national agency is "unfortunately … not going as fast as our crises are going."

Unwanted messages result in arrest: WPS handle condition breach

Southeast almost finished seeding for the spring
Farmers across southeast Saskatchewan made significant progress in the past week, with 95 per cent of seeding now complete. That’s up from 80 per cent the week before and is on par with the region’s five-year average of 94 per cent. This is just behind the provincial mark of 97 per cent complete as well, with the southwest, west-central and northeast at 99 per cent complete.
