Sports Round-Up: Thursday, April 24

The Edmonton Oilers are hoping home ice will help them get back in their first round Stanley Cup Playoff series against LA.

The Kings outscored the Oilers 6-2 last night, taking a two-games-to-none lead. Game 3 set for tomorrow night.

The Washington Capitals took a 2-0 series lead with a 3-1 win over Montreal and the Dallas Stars took a 2-1 series lead with a 2-1 overtime win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Tennis touches down in Swift Current for spring season

As spring gets into full swing, southwest residents, local families, and tennis enthusiasts can now plan to play some tennis or test it out with some lessons for any age.

Earlier this week, Tennis Association Swift Current opened up registration for both memberships and Spring Learn to Play Tennis Lessons, which run from May to June.

Kimberly Hartwig, head coach for Tennis Association Swift Current, shared that no equipment is required as racquets and balls are provided, folks are only asked to wear appropriate footwear and clothing.

U18 South Central squad ready to swing for the fences

The team has been made, the group has been working indoors and now the U18 South Central squad is set to get out onto the diamond and coach Paul Schaak couldn't be more excited to get things going. 

"We spent a lot of time inside and we're grateful for that facility, but we're ready to get outside," Schaak says with a smile. 

Opening day at La Broquerie Golf Course

After a long winter, opening day for La Broquerie Golf Course has arrived and General Manager Pat Gauthier is ready to welcome friends both old and new to the course. 

"It's always exciting," Gauthier says with a big smile. "We've been ramping up all spring and getting ourselves ready. It's almost like a playoff game, we've got the jitters, we've been waiting for this day and it's finally here."

Wilson's Hurricanes advance to WHL Eastern final

Another southwest product is headed to the WHL Final Four.

Swift Current's Anthony Wilson and the Lethbridge Hurricanes survived Game 7 against the Calgary Hitmen with a 3-1 win last night.

The Hurricanes advance to play the Medicine Hat Tigers in the WHL Eastern Conference final.

Wilson has a goal and an assist for Lethbridge in the playoffs.

The loss for Calgary marks the end of former Bronco Connor Hvidston's WHL career.

Swift Current's Hudson and Griffin Darby are playing for Portland in the WHL Western Conference final.
 

Red Wings blanked on home ice in Game 3 of the SJHL Finals

The Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings were blanked for the second straight game as they lost 1-0 in Game 3 of the Canterra Seeds Cup against the Melfort Mustangs. Logan Belton was the lone goal scorer for the Mustangs as he was able to tuck in by Angelo Zol on a faceoff win by Zac Somers for Belton’s sixth of the postseason and his second straight game winning goal.

It's Christmas for many hockey fans these days. The Stanley Cup Finals are well underway, with office pools and brackets ready to go. Post-season trades are being considered, so fans are locked in to see where their favourite player will land or how their team will stack up in the fall. For us in southeast Saskatchewan, we're glued to the SJHL Finals series between the Weyburn Red Wings and the Melfort Mustangs. Right now, they're tied at 1-1 after a split weekend in Melfort.

For the first time since April 13, 2012, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are hosting a SJHL finals game at Crescent Point Place as they take on the Melfort Mustangs in Game 3 of the Canterra Seeds Cup Final. The Red Wings split last weekend’s set on the road, winning Game 1 by a score of 2-1 and then dropping Game 2 by a score of 3-0. Cody Mapes, head coach and general manager of the Red Wings, says there’s work to be done, but is excited to return home.
