It's Christmas for many hockey fans these days. The Stanley Cup Finals are well underway, with office pools and brackets ready to go. Post-season trades are being considered, so fans are locked in to see where their favourite player will land or how their team will stack up in the fall. For us in southeast Saskatchewan, we're glued to the SJHL Finals series between the Weyburn Red Wings and the Melfort Mustangs. Right now, they're tied at 1-1 after a split weekend in Melfort.
Over a decade in the making: Red Wings prepare for first home game of SJHL finals
For the first time since April 13, 2012, the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings are hosting a SJHL finals game at Crescent Point Place as they take on the Melfort Mustangs in Game 3 of the Canterra Seeds Cup Final. The Red Wings split last weekend’s set on the road, winning Game 1 by a score of 2-1 and then dropping Game 2 by a score of 3-0. Cody Mapes, head coach and general manager of the Red Wings, says there’s work to be done, but is excited to return home.
Portagers come home with the cup from MMJHL
Another day, another hockey league that has wrapped up its season. The Manitoba Major Junior Hockey League (MMJHL) wrapped up the championship with a four-to-one series win by the St. Boniface Riels.
Portagers Carson Dubois and Alex van Deynze helped the squad to the win, with three and seven points in the championship respectively.
Central Alberta athletes named to 2025 Prospects Cup roster
Several hockey players from Central Alberta have earned spots at the 2025 Prospects Cup, a provincial showcase for top 2012-born male athletes. The tournament runs May 8–11 at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre in Red Deer.
Athletes selected for the Prospects Cup were identified through regional camps held earlier this month in Calgary, Edmonton, Olds, and Vegreville. Over 160 players will compete on eight regional teams—each with two goaltenders, six defencemen, and 12 forwards—in a modified round-robin format.
2025 regular season lacrosse underway in Weyburn
The 2025 lacrosse season is officially underway here in Weyburn, as two teams hit the road for their first league matchups of the year.
The Weyburn Credit Union U11 Thrashers travel west to Moose Jaw, taking on the Moose Jaw Mustangs Red team at 7:00 P.M. at the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Sportsplex.
The Weyburn Panther Drilling U17 Thrashers will head the same direction as they’ll take on the Moose Jaw Mustangs team at the Moose Jaw Kinsmen Sportsplex at 8:00 P.M.
Cochrane’s Dillon Dubé on trial in 2018 assault case
Cochrane native Dillon Dubé is among five former members of Canada’s world junior hockey team standing trial in London, Ontario, in connection to an alleged sexual assault dating back to 2018.
Dubé, along with Carter Hart, Michael McLeod, Cal Foote, and Alex Formenton, has pleaded not guilty to one count of sexual assault. McLeod faces an additional charge of being a party to the offence of sexual assault.
The charges stem from an alleged incident in London in June 2018.

The Toronto Maple Leafs needed overtime to get the job done and they now have a two-games-to-none lead in their first round series against Ottawa.
Max Domi scored the winner 3:09 into OT giving the Leafs a 3-2 win last night. Former Warriors' star Morgan Reilly scored his 2nd of the playoffs to open the scoring.
Reschny and Royals ousted from WHL playoffs; Swift Current products advance

A double overtime thriller ended the season for Macklin's Cole Reschny and the WHL's Victoria Royals on Tuesday night.
Taking on the Spokane Chiefs in a must-win Game 6 and down two goals in the third period, the Royals sent the game to overtime after former Saskatoon Blade Brandon Lisowsky came up clutch, but Victoria would only keep their season alive an extra 38 minutes before Spokane got the winner to earn a berth in the Western Conference finals.
