Red Deer Rush win gold at Western Canadian Championship
The Red Deer U19A Rush ringette team won gold at the Western Canadian Championship, defeating Team Saskatchewan 3-1 in the final on March 29 in Langley, B.C.
This marks the first time a Red Deer team has won gold at the Westerns.
The Rush went undefeated in the tournament, winning all four round-robin games.
Red Deer defeated Fraser Valley 6-1 and Team Manitoba 6-3, while also beating Team BC 6-5 and Team Saskatchewan 5-4.
Offensively, Hadley Guenther led the tournament with six goals and four assists, while Ally George had seven goals and one assist.

Team Canada took their first loss at the BKT World Men's Curling Championship at the Temple Gardens Centre yesterday afternoon, dropping a 6-5 extra-end decision to the undefeated Team Scotland.
Team Canada Skip Brad Jacobs said there was a bit of difficulty with the ice.
"We saw a little bit more curl out there - which is really nice by the way - it's been pretty straight and fast, and we saw a little bit more curl. We also saw the brooms doing a little more work out there, especially on helping the rocks curl." Jacobs said.
Red Wings move on to semi-finals
Liam Fitzgerald opened the scoring, and Max Chakrabarti finished it, as the Richardson Pioneer Weyburn Red Wings beat the Battlefords North Stars 2-1 Monday night to advance to the SJHL semifinals. The win gave the Red Wings the series win in six games, and marks the first time since the 2011-12 season the team has advanced to the semi-finals.
SCCHS hosts badminton tournament with 'smashing' success
The Swift Current Comprehensive High School was bustling this past weekend as southwest athletes, families, spectators, and coaches attended the Comp's Invitational Senior Badminton Tournament.
The annual home tournament took place on Saturday with athletes from more than 10 communities across Saskatchewan, including Maple Creek, Gull Lake, Ponteix, and more.
The day-long tournament kicked off with a round robin before some well-matched playoffs where local athletes won medals in bronze, silver, and gold across the five different categories.
Selects coach soaking in championship season
The Eastman Selects U18 AAA hockey team captured the league title over the weekend, capping off one of the best seasons in the program's history, but they're not done yet.

The uniquely Cochrane U18 tournament has wrapped up for the 23rd time, once again earning plenty of praise for Cochrane Minor Hockey.
"It was amazing," says coordinator Angela Sellwood. "There were a lot of compliments; lots of teams want to come back next year. Every year, it's the same—they talk about how they've never seen a tournament that’s so amazing and does such a great job honoring the graduates."
Wood River teams claim hockey banners
Two Wood River teams claimed championships over the weekend.
Wood River beat Macklin in the U18 D Hockey Saskatchewan male provincial final.
Kaysen Packet scoring in overtime to win the deciding game for Wood River.
They went through Muenster, Redvers and Macklin to claim the provincial crown.
Final undefeated team falls at BKT World Men's Curling Championship
A sign of how tough the field is, the lone undefeated team, Scotland, received its first loss during the evening draw on Monday at the BKT World Men’s Curling Championship at Temple Gardens Centre.
Leading 2-1 after four ends, Czechia stole one in the fifth and two in the sixth against Scotland. After giving up a single in the seventh, Czechia skip Lukas Klima made a fantastic double takeout to score three and end the game 8-2 in favour of Czechia over Scotland.
Ardens win sportsmanship award
There's an old sports cliche: It's not whether you win or lose, but how you play the game.
The Swift Current Comprehensive High School Ardens senior volleyball team embodied that saying this season, winning the 2024 5A Provincials and being awarded the SHSAA Sportsmanship Banner.
"It means a lot," said Ardens Head Coach Gerod Wiens. "It's a prestigious award that recognizes the outstanding conduct of our team on and off the court. I think it's a recognition of who our team was this year and continues to strive every day."
U13 'A' Humboldt Broncos complete dominating run with a Provincial Championship
Another provincial championship will soon be added to the rafters at the Elgar Petersen Arena thanks to the U13 ‘A’ Humboldt Broncos.
On Saturday, Humboldt completed their immaculate run through the ‘B’ provincial championship tournament, defeating the Moosomin Rangers 6-3, winning the best of three series 2-0.
Ben Hinz scored two goals with Hudson Odelein, Levi Coggar, Bennett Trann and Michael Corcoran also scoring. Ridge Beggs chipped in with three assists.
