Red Deer Rustlers fold prior to start of 30th NCHL season

The Red Deer AA Rustlers have informed league executives of their un-expected plans to fold prior to the start of the North Central Hockey League (NCHL) season. 

"There had been some rumblings that the Rustlers had some problems, yet there was no indication at the league's fall meeting back on September 8th," stated a league news release. "The main reasons given for their sudden demise were due to financial support and the loss of their core players."

Sports Update - Wednesday, October 2nd

The Zone 4 Cross Country Championships took place Tuesday at Stephenfield Park. The varsity first place finishers were Kate Sawatzky of Miller & Nate Phillips of Caman. Junior varsity winners were Alina Wiens of MCI & Cruz Rutledge of Morden. The Middle Years first place finishers were Jamie Breukelman of Dufferin Christian & Colin Klessens of Parkside. As for team results - Miller girls & Morden boys were first in varsity; Sanford girls and Morden boys were first in JV and Dufferin Christian girls and Parkside boys finished in top spot in Middle Years.

MJHSAA's September Athletes of the Month

The Moose Jaw High School Athletic Association has named their first 'Athletes of the Month' for the new school year.

September athletes are as follows:

A. E. Peacock Collegiate - Jackson Folliott (Golf), Ella Mack (Cross Country), and Gerardo Garcia Serrano (Cross Country)

Central Collegiate - Katie Rogers (Cross Country) and Alex Tangan (Football)

Riverview Collegiate - Damien Shepard (Volleyball) and Hannah Hipfner (Volleyball)

Sports Round-Up: Wednesday, October 2

He's back in Moose Jaw and practicing with his teammates! The Moose Jaw Warriors welcoming star forward Brayden Yager after the Winnipeg Jets sent him back to junior for another season. The 19-year-old Yager recorded 95 points in 57 regular season games last year and added 27 points in 20 playoff games, helping the Warriors to their first WHL championship.

The Warriors are on the road this weekend with games in Lethbridge and Medicine Hat.

Former Warriors Dustin Boyd and Jody Lehman have been named to the 2024 induction class of the Warriors & Legends Hall of Fame.

HTA Knights stay undefeated after monstrous win over Chinook

The HTA Knights stayed hot as they obliterated the Chinook High School Coyotes on Friday night (Sept. 27) with a 70-7 victory.

515 total yards were gained by the Knights with 407 of them coming from rushing. HTA then held Chinook to just 61 yards and only nine yards in the air. 

The Knights finished off with three out of four third-down conversions. Chinook only converted once with one out of three conversions on third-down. 

With the win, the Knights stay undefeated this year with a 6-0 record.

Falcons pick up another loss over the weekend

The Foothills Falcons picked up their second loss in as many games after falling to the Medicine Hat High Hawks 58-14 on Friday night (Sept. 27).

That loss wasn't due to effort as the Falcons produced 202 total yards, with 120 coming from rushing. The Hawks however would more than double their yards with 414 total yards. The run game worked for Medicine Hat as they rushed for 245 yards.

The Falcons only converted on one third-down on five opportunities.
