Gens 2-2 after two weeks of play

A comeback against the Mountainview Colts lead the Cochrane Generals to a 3-2 win, Sept. 27, before giving up an early lead against the Okotoks Bisons the next night.

The Colts grabbed a quick 2-0 lead in the first with goals from Konnor Poitras and Corbin Rae but were kept scoreless for the balance of the game. 

West Central athletes shine at SHSAA Provincial Golf Championships

The West Central girls' golf team delivered an outstanding performance at the Saskatchewan High Schools Athletic Association (SHSAA) Provincial Golf Championships held at the Northern Meadows Golf Club in Goodsoil, Saskatchewan, bringing home the gold medal. The winning team included talented athletes Ayla Stevens and Claire Kosolofski from Kindersley, Chloe Wills from Kyle, and Morgan Chabot from Lutheran Collegiate Bible Institute (LCBI).

Pep rally held for World Lifesaving silver medalists

Lifesaving World Championship silver medalists Oliver Johnson and Isaac Thibodeau provided teammates insight into representing the nation on the Gold Coast of Australia, Aug. 20 to Sept. 8.

On Sept. 27 a prep rally was held at the SLS Centre to celebrate their success on the world stage. With a team of 40 athletes, Canada finished 13th overall in the National Youth pool events.

Central Plains hockey hopes for more female referees

The Central Plains region of Manitoba is facing a significant shortage of hockey referees, prompting local officials to actively seek new recruits, particularly female referees and adult officials. Corey Dowd, the chief of officiating for Hockey Manitoba's Central Plains area, talks about the ongoing challenge.

"This has been an ongoing battle, not just in the Central Plains, but all over Manitoba and Canada. We're always actively trying to recruit more officials."

Dowd explains the importance of increasing the number of female referees in the region.

Gold Wings drop pair to Battlefords Sharks

The Weyburn Gold Wings were in Battleford on the weekend for a pair of games against the Battlefords Sharks. The U18 AAA squad was looking to pick up their first win of the season on their first road trip of the season. The Sharks, however, had other plans as they would take both of the games, winning 4-1 Saturday afternoon and 6-2 Sunday afternoon. 

In Saturday's game, the Sharks dominated the first period, scoring three unanswered goals, two of which came on the power play. The Gold Wings struggled to generate offence, only mustering six shots on goal in the opening frame.

Five Inducted - MJ & District Sports Hall of Fame

Moose Jaw and District Sports Hall of Fame inducts Class of 2024 

Five new members were officially inducted into the Moose Jaw and District Sports Hall of Fame at a ceremony at the Moose Jaw Events Centre on Saturday. 

Being inducted into the hall of fame were: 

  • Kenneth (Ken) Bradley – Athlete/Builder - Golf/Athletics 

  • Walter (Wally) Boshuck – Builder – Speed Skating 

  • Troy Gottselig – Athlete – Basketball 

  • Brian Montague – Athlete – Powerlifting 

Laplante, Gault lead Pistons in rout of Freeze

Mathis Laplante made Steinbach Pistons history, becoming the first rookie to score 3 goals in his MJHL debut while fellow first-year Reece Gault also scored his first career goal, helping Steinbach destroy the Winnipeg Freeze 7-1. 

Before the scoring party started, it was the Freeze that pushed to open the scoring but Steinbach goalie Zach Burleigh stood tall, making a big save through traffic to keep the game scoreless.
