Have you reserved your campsite for Summer?

Spring and Summer are just around the corner and that also means that Central Albertans will be heading out on weekends for camping. 

This year, Alberta Parks introduced a new camping reservation platform to help Albertans and visitors plan for their camping adventures.

In the first 10 days since the new site opened, over 11,500 camping reservations have been processed, with almost 36,000 nights booked.

Reservations can be made in advance on a rolling 90-day window for individual and backcountry camping and 180 days ahead for group and comfort camping.

Olds RCMP investigate fatal motor vehicle collision

On March 6, at 11:55 p.m., Olds RCMP received a report of a collision between two semi trucks on Highway 791 and Highway 27.

Upon arrival, the driver and lone occupant of one of the semi’s, a 50-year-old Red Deer resident, was deceased.

The driver of the other semi was treated on scene by EMS and released.

Initial investigation indicates that the deceased’s semi was travelling Southbound on Highway 791 when it failed to stop at the intersection with Highway 27 and was struck by a Westbound semi.

Temporary closures at Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care

Due to gaps in physician coverage, the Sylvan Lake Advanced Ambulatory Care Service (SLAACS) will be temporarily closed from 2 p.m. today (March 7) until 1 p.m. Friday (March 8).  

Normal business hours will resume on Friday. 

SLAACS will also be closed March 14 from 7:30 a.m. to 1 p.m., and March 15 from 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. 

Lacombe Generals are now NCHL South Division champions

The Lacombe AA Generals beat the Red Deer Rustlers 5-3 on Wednesday night to become the North Central Hockey League (NCHL) South Division Champions.

With the victory, the Gens also won their best-of-seven series and will move onto round three of the Vanberg Cup Playoffs.

Just over 250 fans watched at the Penhold Muliplex as the home team Rustlers went up 3-0 in the first period. 

Lacombe would then storm back in the second and third periods with five unanswered goals from Troy Maclise, TJ Brown, Thomas Beretta, Tyrell Bourk and Colin Zimmer.

Ottawa announces $97 million for projects under the Agricultural Clean Technology Program

The Agricultural Clean Technology  (ACT) Program provides farmers and agri-businesses with funding to help develop and adopt the latest clean technologies to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions and boost their long-term competitiveness. 

This morning, Federal Agriculture Minister Lawrence MacAulay announced over $97 million through the program for 162 projects across the country.

The funding includes support for 27 projects in Manitoba, 35 in Saskatchewan, and 33 projects in Alberta.

Sylvan Lake Municipal Library and Red Deer’s Mustard Seed working to meet the needs of the community

The Sylvan Lake Municipal Library received a food donation for the Little Free Pantry from the Red Deer’s Mustard Seed.  

Corrie Brown, Sylvan Lake Municipal Library's Head Programmer explained that the pantry is a no-questions-asked resource for residents to use when they need it.  

“It is completely donation driven. It's not something that we have a lot of money in our budget for,” Brown said.   

Alberta Infrastructure to host Red Deer Hospital expansion project information session

Alberta Infrastructure will be giving updates on the Red Deer Hospital expansion project during a public information session next week.  

If Budget 2024 is passed, the capital plan will allocate $810 million over three years toward a $1.8 billion investment for the redevelopment of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.   

Saskatchewan's Court of Appeal reviews thumbs-up emoji case

Saskatchewan’s Court of Appeal has reserved its decision in a case that found a thumbs-up emoji to be legally binding.

It's an interesting case that has attracted a lot of interest and a lot of discussion.

The case stems from a text conversation between South West Terminal and Achter Land & Cattle Ltd over a flax contract that was not fulfilled.

In March of 2021,  a grain buyer with SWT sent a text to one of the owners Chris Achter saying that the company was looking to buy 86 tonnes of flax for $17 per bushel to be delivered in the fall.
