Donald Trump's press secretary says Feb. 1 deadline for tariffs 'still on the books'
U.S. President Donald Trump's press secretary says the plan to slap Canada with tariffs on Saturday is still in play, as NDP leader Jagmeet Singh called for Parliament to return to prepare for the threat of devastating duties.
Karoline Leavitt told reporters at the White House that she spoke with the president Monday night and he indicated Feb. 1 was "still on the books" for imposing tariffs against Canada and Mexico.
Major Crimes Unit investigating homicide on O'Chiese First Nation
On Jan. 28, shortly after midnight, Rocky Mountain House RCMP received a 911 call reporting a shooting at a residence on O'Chiese First Nation.
Upon arrival, police located a deceased male.
The deceased has been transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner and the death is being investigated as a homicide.
The Alberta RCMP Major Crimes Unit has been deployed and taken over the investigation.
Update: Crash cleared near Innisfail on QEII
The Crash on the QEII northbound lanes between Antler Hill and Penhold has been cleared.
Earlier this evening there were reports of a crash in the area and emergency vehicles were on scene.
Traffic is now moving smoothly through the area.
Foreign interference probe calls on party leaders to get security clearances
The federal public inquiry into foreign interference is calling on the leaders of all political parties to get top-secret security clearances — a recommendation that Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre is not following.
In her final report, commissioner Marie-Josée Hogue said party leaders should seek such clearance as soon as possible after they are elected. She recommended that all parties in the House of Commons ensure at least two of their members have top-secret clearance.
Beaumont resident wanted for Millet grocery store robbery
On Dec. 30, 2024, at approximately 1:20 p.m., the Wetaskiwin RCMP responded to a robbery at a grocery store in Millet.
The suspects stole groceries and fled the store, making it to their vehicle.
After being confronted by two store employees, the suspects sped off from the location with one of the victims on the hood of the vehicle, who was then thrown off.
The other victim was dragged a short distance from the driver's side door.
Both employees sustained minor injuries.
Bentley Rodeo to go on one-year hiatus for facility upgrades
Upgrades to the Bentley arena will impact the community-favourite summertime event, the Bentley Rodeo.
The upgrades to the facility include replacing the existing underfloor heating and cooling system, and potential drainage improvements.
Work will begin in March and is expected to be completed by September.
Ponoka power outage scheduled for Wednesday
A temporary power outage is scheduled for Wednesday, Jan. 29 from 9 a.m. to about 12:30 p.m. in the Town of Ponoka along the following streets as crews conduct electrical maintenance.
This includes properties:
• On the west side of 51 Street between 61 Avenue and 63 Avenue Close; and
• On the east end of 52 Street Close.
Affected properties have been notified by hand-delivered notices, check your front door or mailbox for a notice if you are in the affected area.
Firearm offender arrested after ramming police car
On Monday, members of the Wetaskiwin Crime Reduction Unit observed a known offender who was a recent suspect in a firearms investigation driving around in Wetaskiwin.
Officers attempted to stop the vehicle, but the driver fled.
The vehicle was later observed pulling into a rural driveway off North Boundary Road.
Donations close Thursday for Ty's Third Annual Giving Back
The Hultink family is collecting toys and monetary donations, for Ty's Third Annual Giving Back, in memory of their son.
The items collected will be donated to the Stollery Children's Hospital Child Life program.
“They support kids through severe sicknesses, provide gifts for the kids and siblings, and fun experiences,” said Tyler’s mother, Deb Hultink.
