Poilievre says he wants to cut the federal public service, doesn't mind remote work
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre says a government led by him would cut the number of federal public servants — but he doesn't mind if they work from home.
When asked by Radio-Canada on Tuesday if U.S. President Donald Trump’s executive order sending federal workers back to the office five days a week is a good idea, Poilievre said that what matters is whether or not public servants do the work.
He said that work is not getting done now within the federal government, though he fell short of going into detail about public servants' productivity.
Manitoba Canola Growers Association releases results from trial types
Manitoba Canola Growers Association has released a report from its Canola On-Farm Research program.
The program started in 2022 with three trial types across 12 trial locations. It has since grown to include five trial types and 37 testing locations across Manitoba. The program aims to collaborate with farmers, agronomists, and researchers to provide the most relevant and valuable information to its members.
Lacombe emergency crews respond to motor vehicle collision
Lacombe emergency crews, including the Lacombe Fire Department and the Lacombe Police Service, responded to a motor vehicle collision at the intersection of C & E Trail and 50 Ave. Wednesday evening around 6:15 p.m.
Traffic was down to one lane in the area.
A tow truck was on the scene tending to one of the vehicles.
There is no word on any injuries, the cause of the collision, or how many vehicles were involved.
Central Alberta Online will provide more information when it becomes available.
Red Deer Mayor Ken Johnston not seeking re-election
Red Deer Mayor Ken Johnston announced Wednesday afternoon that he will not seek re-election for the 2025 municipal election.
“After much thought and deep conversations with my family, I've made the difficult decision to retire from public life,” Johnston said on social media. "I'm excited for the future of Red Deer, and I'm at peace knowing we've built a strong foundation together."

Sylvan Lake girl needs your help for brain tumor treatment in Florida
A Sylvan Lake girl, named Maite Lemieux, needs treatment that can’t be done in Canada. The Grade four student at Steffi Woima Elementary school was diagnosed with a brain tumor in December. She had surgery to remove it, but unfortunately after only a month it grew back.

Warming trend continues for Central Alberta
After some wild weather over the past few days, conditions are looking to stabilize over the next week or so for Central Alberta.
Environment and Climate Change Canada meteorologist Heather Rombough says temperatures will remain above average for the foreseeable future.
"It looks like it's going to be pretty mild through the week. Temperatures are forecast to be around zero degrees basically through the weekend," she said. "It looks like this pattern doesn't really change a whole lot."
Emergency bridge repairs continue on QEII near Lacombe; expect delays
Motorists can expect traffic delays on Highway 2 northbound south of Highway 12 as crews complete emergency bridge repairs.
Expect closure of the right-hand lane, speed reduction and be prepared to stop.
The speed has been reduced to 50 km/h in the area.
Repairs are scheduled to be ongoing until Feb. 3.

New family doctor in Delburne will offer care at Red Deer Hospital
A newly recruited family physician is available to provide care to residents in the Central Zone.
Dr. Ignacio Del Papa is working out of Delburne Medical Centre and provides hospitalist services at Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre.
He received his medical education at the University of Buenos Aires and practised most recently in Argentina prior to coming to Canada.
Exciting start for RDP Kings and Queens seasons
This past weekend, the Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Futsal teams had exciting starts to their seasons. The RDP Basketball teams were downed by the St. Mary’s University Lightning. The Queens Hockey team blanked the NAIT Ooks. The Kings Hockey team split its weekend series with the Ooks. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens and Mixed Curling teams played well at the Winter Regional, advancing to the ACAC Curling Championships.
