Innisfail moving forward with Aquatic Centre renovations

The Town of Innisfail is moving forward with a major modernization of the existing Innisfail Aquatic Centre. 

The process is estimated to take between eight to ten months, with construction expected to start mid-year.

“There have been no substantial renovations to the Innisfail Aquatic Centre since the facility was built in 1987,” explains Meghan Jenkins, the town’s director of community services. “Many of the facility’s mechanical and structural components need replacement simply to maintain functionality and to comply with applicable codes and best practices”.

Westerner Exhibition Association (WEA) loan agreement adjusted

City Council passed second and third reading of a loan amendment bylaw to suspend interest and principal payments related to a $19 million WEA loan with the goal to further support WEA's financial sustainability.

The item was back in front of Council today after first reading occurred in December 2024, at which time Council expressed the need for a more detailed report on the impacts of WEA's loan on the City's financial position.

Red Deer Rebels add forward to roster

The Red Deer Rebels have added forward Brett Calhoon to the club's roster. 

Calhoon is in his third season in the league and has 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 33 games played with the Kelowna Rockets.

The Kamloops, B.C. native was selected by the Medicine Hat Tigers in round nine, 193rd overall in the 2020 WHL Prospects Draft and has 22 points in 97 career games.

Another busy week for RDP Athletics

This week, Red Deer Polytechnic Kings and Queens Futsal teams will begin the ACAC season. The RDP Basketball teams will play the St. Mary’s University Lightning twice. The Kings and Queens Hockey teams will meet the NAIT Ooks. The Red Deer Polytechnic Kings, Queens and Mixed Curling teams will look to continue their strong performances at the Winter Regional in Edmonton.

2025 to be a productive year for Central Alberta infrastructure  

The provincial government is highlighting infrastructure projects completed last year, with a focus on 2025 projects. 

Work to develop relationships with industry partners across various sectors will continue through engagement opportunities with a focus on collaboration and productivity, a Government of Alberta news release said.   

Police execute over 1,000 warrants targeting top offenders in Alberta

As part of a new RCMP-led data sharing initiative, Alberta RCMP, Calgary Police Service, and Alberta Sheriffs worked together in a Joint Forces Operation (JFO), targeting the top priority offenders in the province, through a warrant roundup.

The decisions to implement the initiative came following the recognition by Alberta RCMP that all law enforcement agencies in Alberta were ranking priority offenders in different ways. Understanding that criminals operate in various jurisdictions, it was determined that a province wide-model to identify and prioritize offenders was required.

City Council approves first reading of updated Traffic Bylaw and General Penalty Bylaw

At the regular council meeting Monday, January 13th, Red Deer City Council completed first reading of updated Traffic Bylaw (3707/2025) and General Penalties Bylaw (3036/A-2025) that will provide clarity and consistency in application of the bylaws as well as eliminate challenges in enforcement.
