Rebels give up trio of power play goals in loss to Calgary

The Red Deer Rebels fell short Sunday in Calgary in their bid to win two in a row this weekend.

The Rebels were outscored 6-1 by the Hitmen after beating the visiting Moose Jaw Warriors 5-1 on Saturday.

Red Deer had lost 13 straight before Saturday's win at Peavey Mart Centrium.

Penalties were the big story in this matchup for Red Deer, who gave up a trio of power play markers.

Carter Yakemchuk opened the scoring for the Hitmen at 7:32 of the first with his 15th goal of the season. Tanner Howe would make it 2-0 at 6:52 of the second.

Final shot punches ticket to Scotties for Team Skrlik

Team Skrlik will represent Alberta next month at the 2025 Scotties Tournament of Hearts after a thrilling 6-5 win over Team Kaufman in the finals of the 2025 Alberta Women's Curling Championship Sunday in Rimbey.

Skrlik had a 5-4 lead heading into the 8th end when Kaufman was able to steal one to tie things up at 5. The teams blanked the 9th leading to Skrlik's game-winning shot in the 10th.

Red Deer City Council to consider changing school and playground zone times

The Monday, January 27, Regular City Council Meeting will start at 10:30 a.m. in a closed session.

It is anticipated that Council will move to open after the lunch break at 1 p.m.

Citizen Representative Appointments to Housing and Homelessness Integration Committee: Council will appoint two replacement representatives to this committee. One Indigenous Community Representative and one Business Community Representative.

Earthquake in Banff area Sunday morning

According to Earthquakes Canada a relatively small earthquake happened about 30 km ENE of Lake Louise.

The quake which had a magnitude of 4.5 M, happened at around 4:30 Sunday morning. Some people in the area said they could feel the earth moving, but there were no immediate reports of damage.

Earthquakes Canada says, on average over 4000 quakes are recorded every year in our country. That is about 11 per day. Of those 4000, only about 50 are felt.

Rebels break losing streak as Warriors didn't "come out to play"

The Red Deer Rebels 13-game losing streak has finally ended.

In front of a paid crowd of over 5500, who were also there to celebrate Wooly Bully's birthday, the home team came out strong with 3 goals in the first period.

Jhett Larson started the scoring with his 5th goal of the season at the 11:08 mark. Matthew Gard with his 10th and Brett Calhoon (7th) would finish off the first frame with the Rebels up 3-0.

Two more goals from Derek Thurston with his 5th and Beckett Hamilton with his 10th, in the third period would al but put the game away.

Canadian retailer Peavey Mart announces nearly two dozen store closures

A well-known chain of hardware and agriculture supply stores is set to close nearly two dozen locations across Ontario and Nova Scotia.

Peavey Mart announced last week the closure of 22 stores as part of "a strategic plan to address ongoing challenges in the retail sector and strengthen its business for the future." The closures will take place by the end of April 2025.
