Snowfall amounts will vary across the region; conditions expected to improve this evening

A low-pressure system is making its way through Central Alberta Wednesday, bringing with it heavy snow and cold temperatures.

Heather Pimiskern, meteorologist with Environment and Climate Change Canada, says the system is developing over southern Alberta near the U.S. border. She notes widespread snow will extend from the Grand Prairie region all the way to the Cypress Hills area. A snowfall warning has been issued for the region.

Court of King’s Bench upholds RDCRS Board of Trustees’ decision to disqualify trustee

The Court of King’s Bench of Alberta, presided over by Justice Cheryl Arcand-Kootenay, has upheld the Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools (RDCRS) Board of Trustees’ decision to disqualify former Trustee Monique LaGrange. 

This ruling follows an earlier judicial decision where sanctions were imposed on LaGrange for breaching the Board’s Code of Conduct. 

Justice Arcand-Kootenay found that disqualification was necessary after LaGrange failed to comply with those sanctions and continued to make harmful public statements.

Rebels head into Christmas break on a losing note

The Red Deer Rebels comeback fell short Tuesday night at the Peavey Mart Centrium against Swift Current, as the Broncos left town with a 5-4 win.

Red Deer got off to a hot start with goals by Beckett Hamilton and Trae Wilke early in the first.

The Broncos stormed back however with three goals of their own to close out the opening period.

Clarke Caswell would put the visitors up 4-2 at 14:56 of the second on the power play.

Parker Rondeau added another less than a minute later to make it 5-2.

Poor visibility on Central Alberta highways this morning; snowfall warning remains in effect

511 Alberta is reporting poor visibility on Highway 2 between Red Deer and Lacombe this morning. The same conditions are being reported on Highway 2A.

The highways are partly snow covered, with ice/snow on the shoulder. Snow, fog, strong wind and drifting and blowing snow are also factoring into driving conditions.

Justin Trudeau 'taking the time to reflect' following Freeland departure ▶️

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is taking some time to reflect after Chrystia Freeland's bombshell resignation, the natural resources minister said on Tuesday.

"The prime minister, as I understand it, a number of caucus colleagues have said that the prime minister has said that he will reflect on both the decision that minister Freeland made, but also what he's heard from members of his own caucus," Jonathan Wilkinson said.

"I think we all need to give him a little time to reflect, and I respect that fact that he's going to take some time to reflect."

Bulldogs head coach stepping down  

The Blackfalds Bulldogs Head Coach Doug Quinn is stepping down for the remainder of the 2024-2025 season.  

Quinn had previously planned to retire before the start of this season but chose to stay on to observe the team’s transition into the new league and to help prepare his coaching and hockey operations staff for a seamless succession, the Bulldogs said in a news release.   

Snowfall warning issued for Central Alberta 

On Dec. 17 at 3:52 p.m., Environment Canada issued a snowfall warning for areas of Central Alberta.  

Heavy snowfall is expected tonight and Wednesday (Dec. 18), with total amounts of 10 to 15 cm.  

Snowfall will begin in western Alberta this evening, spreading eastward through Central Alberta by early Wednesday morning.  

The heaviest snow will fall during the day on Wednesday.

Although we are getting into the holiday season, the need for blood donations doesn't take a break.

Shamus Neeson, the Community Development Manager for Red Deer and area, says it's a very busy time of the year.

"We've got a very long and loyal list of donors that come to the Red Deer Donor Center during the year. But as we all know, when the holidays come, things kind of stop. That need for blood never takes a holiday off, so we're encouraging people that if you're available this holiday season, we can definitely use you."
