U.S. eases border rules for dogs from Canada as Liberals try to secure exemption

After much hounding by federal officials, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control is giving Canadian dogs a slightly longer leash when it comes to new rules aimed at controlling the spread of rabies.

Health Minister Mark Holland said Wednesday that he's been able to secure some changes to the regulations for dogs entering the United States from Canada after a series of meetings in Washington, D.C.

"We made good progress, I think it significantly improves the situation, but it's not enough," he said.

Multiple RCMP units arrest fleeing suspect near Carstairs

On June 22, at 11:40 p.m., the Alberta RCMP were notified by Calgary Police Service of a suspect that had previously fled from police and was being followed by a HAWKS helicopter.   

Officers from Calgary Police Service, and RCMP from Didsbury and Olds set up a covert tire deflation device and stopped the vehicle on the QE II Highway near Highway 581.   

Canadian Federation of Agriculture to meet with Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers


The Canadian Federation of Agriculture (CFA) is holding their Summer Meeting in Whitehorse this week.

The meeting is planned in conjunction with the Federal, Provincial and Territorial Agriculture Ministers Annual Conference.

CFA President Keith Currie says their Summer Meeting which covers two days has focused on a wide variety of issues from how ag production companies like Syngenta, BASF and Nutrien are looking to the future.

Rural communities included in $30B, 10-year fund for public transit

Applications opened Wednesday for two streams in the federal government's new $30-billion public transit fund even though the money won't start flowing for another two years, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said.

The 10-year Canada Public Transit Fund has been in the works for months and was in the recent federal budget but more details were provided as Trudeau made a visit to a subway yard in Toronto.

Sylvan Lake resident wins $100,000 from scratch ticket

A Sylvan Lake local just won $100,000 from a Scratch and Win ticket.   

Kristina Loeppky is new to purchasing scratch tickets and said she was in disbelief when she realized she had won the big prize.  

“I scratched it when I got home and saw the win,” she said. “We went right back to the store to check if it was true!”  

Red Deer Emergency Services on scene of hazmat spill

According to The City of Red Deer, Red Deer Emergency Services (RDES) is on the scene of a hazmat incident in Edgar Industrial.

You may notice vapor in the air, however our crews have this incident under control and there is no risk to the public at this time.

Red Deer Hospital gets new general surgeon

A newly recruited general surgeon is now working full-time out of the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre and City View Surgical Associates Clinic.

Dr. Emily Mitic has been practising in Red Deer as a locum covering a maternity leave since January and is now a permanent member of the team as of July 8. Dr. Mitic grew up in southern Alberta and received her medical degree from the University of Alberta in 2015. She later completed her general surgery residency at the Northern Ontario School of Medicine in Sudbury, Ont., in 2021.

Beach Handball tournament on this weekend in Sylvan Lake

Sylvan Lake will be the host for a huge beach handball tournament, this weekend on Saturday and Sunday(July 27th and 28th.)

The tournament is in conjunction with Calgary Handball, Team Canada Handball Federation and Central Alberta Handball.

FPT Ag Ministers meet in the Yukon

The Federal, Provincial, and Territorial Agriculture Ministers are holding their annual conference in Whitehorse.

Manitoba's Agriculture Minister, Ron Kostyshyn, wants to see a discussion around Trade and Market Access.

Kostyshyn says he's very concerned about Voluntary Country of Origin Labelling, and believes this could seriously affect pork  exports to the United States.
 
Manitoba is the largest pig-producing province in Canada, and is the largest exporter of weanlings into the United States.

Severe thunderstorm watches in effect for Rocky, Caroline and Sundre areas

Just after 4:30 pm, Tuesday, July 16th, Environment Canada issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Rocky Mountain House, Caroline and Sundre areas.

Conditions are favourable for the development of severe thunderstorms that may be capable of producing strong wind gusts, large hail and heavy rain.

Thunderstorms will continue to develop this evening, with the potential of some becoming severe. The threat of severe thunderstorms will end later this evening.
